Are you looking for a reliable VPN to bypass Netflix’s geo-restrictions? We highlight the best Netflix VPNs below. These providers can unblock Netflix and other streaming platforms.
- NordVPN: Popular VPN with Netflix-focused features
- Surfshark: Affordable VPN with access to the widest selection of Netflix libraries
- ExpressVPN: Fast, premium VPN that can unblock multiple Netflix libraries
- CyberGhost: VPN with dedicated servers for streaming Netflix
- PIA: Privacy-focused VPN with plenty of servers to choose from
Based on our tests and readers’ recommendations, the overall best VPN for Netflix is NordVPN. It has excellent streaming speeds and can unblock the American Netflix library.
Note: Many VPN providers can’t guarantee access to Netflix through their servers at the moment due to a change in the way the streaming company deals with proxies and VPN IP addresses. The providers are working on a solution, and some have (temporarily) succeeded, but you might not always be able to access geo-specific content on Netflix using a VPN.
Think you’ve seen everything Netflix has to offer? Think again! Netflix has grown considerably over the past decade and continues to add new movies and TV shows to its massive collection.
If you’ve tried to access Netflix while traveling, you may have noticed that the content available on the streaming platform differs depending on your location. This is because every country has a different Netflix library, with a unique selection of movies and TV shows.
Did you know it’s possible to access the Netflix library of any country? And it’s pretty easy too! You can watch the American version of Netflix, even if you’re not in the USA.
In this article, we’ll show you how to unblock the Netflix libraries of different countries using a VPN (Virtual Private Network) and highlight the best VPNs for Netflix.
Best VPN for Netflix: What to Look For
A VPN is a valuable tool for bypassing censorship and other geo-restrictions — like the one Netflix uses to ensure only people in a particular location can access some content.
When you connect to a VPN server anywhere in the world, every website or online platform you visit will assume you’re in the same location as the server. This means you can use a VPN to access foreign news and social media platforms that are blocked where you live. You can also use a VPN to access the Netflix library of a different country.
Depending on your reasons for using one, the things to look for in a VPN may differ. However, there are some indispensable features that every VPN user values, like speed and privacy.
If you’re looking for the best VPN for Netflix, these are the essential features to consider when making a choice:
|VPN Feature||Why It’s Important|
|Access to Netflix||Not all VPN providers can bypass Netflix’s geo-restrictions. This is the most important feature to consider when choosing a VPN for Netflix.|
|Speed||When streaming on Netflix or any other platform, speed is important. If your connection is too slow, it’ll start buffering and lagging. Netflix will also downgrade the video quality. You need a super fast VPN to stream Netflix from abroad (or even at home!).|
Understandably, the longer the distance between you and a VPN server, the slower the connection. The speeds of different VPN providers vary. We have conducted speed tests to determine the fastest VPNs.
|Privacy and anonymity||While privacy and anonymity may not be your primary concern when selecting a VPN for Netflix; it is essential to choose a secure provider. The best VPNs have comprehensive security features, including 256-bit AES and SSL encryption, and protocols like OpenVPN and WireGuard. Using a secure VPN makes it difficult for third parties to track you and ensures you can browse the web anonymously.|
|Server network||If you want access to the Netflix libraries of different countries across the globe, you’ll need to choose a provider that offers VPN servers in several countries.|
|Customer service||Netflix is constantly looking for ways to identify and block VPN and proxy servers. As a result, some servers may be unable to access Netflix from time to time. If a provider has good customer service, they can guide you to a server that is not yet blocked, and help you deal with any other issues you may encounter.|
|Dedicated IP address||Netflix is likely to block an IP address when they notice many people are using it, such as a VPN server’s IP. Using a dedicated IP eliminates the chances of this happening. However, this feature costs extra and reduces your privacy to a certain extent.|
|Number of devices allowed||All the VPNs we recommend for Netflix have useful apps you can download and install on your smartphone, laptop, tablet, and smart TV. This allows you to access Netflix on any device, including an iPhone, iPad, Mac, Windows PC, Smart TV, Chromecast, Android TV, and other Android devices.|
These are some of the key factors we considered when selecting the best Netflix VPNs.
The 5 Best VPNs for Netflix
Netflix catalogs differ depending on your location. You can simply hop on a different VPN server to access a new selection of movies and TV shows.
But not all VPN providers can bypass Netflix’s VPN blocks. So, you’ll need a reliable VPN to access Netflix.
It is important to note that Netflix does not condone the use of VPNs. Using a VPN goes against Netflix’s terms of service. The streaming service reserves the right to terminate your account if you use a VPN—although there are no known instances of this happening.
Netflix has intensified its efforts to combat the use of VPNs to circumvent its geo-blocks. In 2021, the company announced a ban on some residential IPs for VPN usage.
If you want to access the US Netflix library, you need to connect to a VPN server located in the country—ideally, one that Netflix has not blocked.
We’ve tested a lot of VPNs to identify the top five providers that can unblock Netflix.
Here are our top five best VPNs for Netflix:
- NordVPN: Popular VPN with Netflix-focused features
- Surfshark: Affordable VPN with access to the widest selection of Netflix catalogs
- ExpressVPN: Fast, premium VPN that allows you to access multiple Netflix libraries
- CyberGhost: VPN with dedicated servers for streaming Netflix
- PIA: Privacy-focused VPN with plenty of server choices for Netflix
1. NordVPN: Popular VPN for streaming Netflix securely
|Access Netflix using servers in nearly 60 countries||Inconsistent connectivity to Netflix|
|Unblock other popular US streaming services, including Amazon Prime Video, Hulu, and HBO Max||Mobile app is less user-friendly|
|Actively pushes back against geo-based restrictions by streaming sites|
|Strong encryption and advanced security features, plus a verified no-logs policy|
NordVPN is a leader in the VPN industry, known for its fast, reliable servers, competitive pricing, and expert customer service.
With over 5,500 servers in 59 countries, NordVPN ensures you can access just about any Netflix catalog of your choice.
While NordVPN, like all providers, has been experiencing challenges with unblocking Netflix recently, it was one of the first providers to reinstate access to Netflix via VPN after the streaming giant launched its war against VPN providers.
At the time of writing, we could access the US Netflix library and also bypass Netflix’s blocks in Australia, Canada, Japan, the Netherlands, and the United Kingdom.
Although its apps and software are intuitive and easy to use, NordVPN recently switched to in-browser logins (instead of in-app logins). This may cause problems if you’re in a country where the Nord website is blocked.
Using NordVPN to unblock Netflix
NordVPN’s SmartPlay feature makes it safe and easy to stream content from a different country. It uses DNS rerouting and additional IP addresses to improve your experience. You don’t have to activate it separately; it’s built into the VPN software.
If you run into trouble, NordVPN recommends the following:
- Clear your browser cache, then try again.
- Connect to the NordVPN DNS servers (188.8.131.52 and 184.108.40.206), clear your cache, then try again.
- Reach out to the customer service team. Often, they can point you to servers that can unblock Netflix.
- Excellent protection and a large network of servers
- Nice and pleasing application
- No logs

2. Surfshark: Cheap, reliable VPN for accessing different Netflix libraries
|Reliably unblocks Netflix in America, the UK, Canada, and other locations||Has relatively fewer servers|
|Cheaper — gives you more bang for your buck||You may have to use the browser extensions|
|Supports unlimited devices so the whole family can stream simultaneously|
The Surfshark app is extremely user-friendly, and it provides excellent speeds. This provider has a great customer support team, but the chances that you’ll experience any lag or other issues are slim. Surfshark is quite adept at sidestepping Netflix’s efforts to block VPN use.
At the time of writing, you can access Netflix libraries in the US, Canada, Australia, and the UK using Surfshark. Surfshark has many extra features that enhance your safety and general browsing experience. It comes with advanced security features and allows you to download torrents anonymously.
There’s something else that makes Surfshark a great VPN for watching Netflix — with just one account, you can connect an unlimited number of devices. In other words, if you use Surfshark, you and your entire family can stream films and series simultaneously!
Its incredibly affordable price also makes Surfshark a worthwhile Netflix VPN. Read our full Surfshark review to learn more about this provider.
Using Surfshark to unblock Netflix
If you want to optimize your streaming experience, you’re better off using Surfshark’s browser extensions for Firefox and Chrome.
The Netflix app can make unblocking difficult. Surfshark recommends streaming from your browser instead. The extensions are specifically designed to get around geo-restrictions.
Since Surfshark has over 500 servers in the United States, you have a vast array of servers to access the US Netflix library.
- Very user-friendly and works with Netflix and torrents
- 30-day money-back guarantee. No questions asked!
- Cheap with many extra options
Still in doubt about whether Surfshark is the best VPN for Netflix? You can get a free trial of this VPN, risk-free, thanks to its 30-day money-back guarantee.
3. ExpressVPN: Premium VPN with fast speeds and great support
|Automatically finds the fastest VPN servers for streaming||One of the most expensive premium VPN providers on the market|
|Customer service can help bypass Netflix blocks|
|Unblock other streaming services, including Peacock, HBO Max, and Hulu|
ExpressVPN is a great VPN for unblocking Netflix. With this provider, you can access the Netflix libraries of different countries, including the US, UK, Canada, Australia, Spain, France, and Germany.
Even in the face of Netflix’s campaign against VPN use, this provider continues to bypass its geo-blocks. In order to do so, ExpressVPN is constantly updating its server IPs. This is how they ensure you can continue to access Netflix from anywhere in the world.
If Netflix blocks your VPN connection (which rarely happens with this provider), ExpressVPN’s customer service team will help you find a new, compatible server. So, watching Netflix with this VPN shouldn’t be a problem. You can use the live chat feature to contact ExpressVPN’s customer service team round the clock.
ExpressVPN offers high-speed VPN servers in 94 countries. It is also a great pick for unblocking other major streaming platforms, including Amazon Prime Video, Disney+, Peacock, HBO Max, and Hulu.
Using ExpressVPN to unblock Netflix
Thanks to its special MediaStreamer DNS feature, ExpressVPN lets you stream Netflix on lesser-used devices, including smart TVs and gaming consoles.
One of the key features that makes ExpressVPN the best VPN for Netflix is its strong obfuscation capabilities. Obfuscation makes your VPN traffic look like regular HTTPS traffic. This significantly reduces the chances of streaming platforms like Netflix blocking your IP.
- Very easy to use VPN
- Perfect for anonymous browsing, downloading, and streaming (i.e. Netflix)
- 3000+ servers in 94 countries
Still unsure whether this is the right provider for you? ExpressVPN’s 30-day money-back guarantee lets you try its service before committing to a long-term subscription.
If you’re unhappy with your experience, you can simply ask for your money back. You can learn more about this provider in our ExpressVPN review.
4. CyberGhost: VPN with dedicated servers for streaming Netflix
|Dedicated Netflix streaming servers with great speeds||No independent security audit thus far|
|Also unblocks Disney+, Amazon Prime Video, BBC iPlayer, and HBO Max||OpenVPN speeds were below average during our test|
|Access support quickly via live chat if you run into issues|
CyberGhost is easy to use and has a great interface on its desktop and mobile apps. You can access over 9,000 servers in 91 countries, and CyberGhost’s VPN servers provide excellent speeds.
You can connect up to seven devices simultaneously to just one CyberGhost account. This means you can stream Netflix on multiple devices.
At the time of writing, CyberGhost could unblock the US Netflix library successfully. We could also access the Netflix libraries of Germany, Japan, Spain, and the United Kingdom.
CyberGhost provides great connection speeds. We could watch all our favorite shows without any lagging or delay.
Using CyberGhost to unblock Netflix
CyberGhost has a dedicated US Netflix server. This server is specifically designed to unblock the US Netflix library and is, according to our speed tests, one of the fastest servers on the CyberGhost network.
CyberGhost has many other servers that are optimized to work with specific streaming platforms. So, if you want to watch Hulu, Disney+, or something on a different platform, CyberGhost has got you covered.
- Very user-friendly
- High quality for a low price
- Torrents and Netflix possible
5. PIA: Plenty of secure VPN servers for streaming Netflix
|Reliably unblocks US Netflix, BBC iPlayer, Amazon Prime Video||May struggle with unblocking Netflix libraries outside the US|
|Tons of security features||No independent security audit thus far|
|Better value for money compared to others, like ExpressVPN|
Private Internet Access (PIA) is another top VPN that can unblock the US Netflix library. Users have reported problems with less popular Netflix libraries, but at the time of writing, we could bypass Netflix blocks in the US, UK, Japan, Netherlands, Brazil, and Canada.
Private Internet Access has over 35,000 servers in about 70 countries, which makes it one of the best VPNs for Netflix.
PIA also stands out for its privacy. The company says it does not keep any logs — although there has been no independent security audit to prove this—and offers strong encryption and protocols. It’s also priced reasonably.
Unfortunately, PIA doesn’t have a live chat service like NordVPN and ExpressVPN, so it may take longer to get support.
Using PIA to unblock Netflix
PIA works hard to keep Netflix accessible to its users. While it doesn’t have specialized servers for unblocking Netflix and other streaming services, Private Internet Access offers dedicated IP addresses.
Generally, a shared IP gives you more privacy and anonymity. However, part of Netflix’s strategy to limit VPN use is blocking IP addresses that are used by multiple users.
If you request a dedicated IP, that address is yours alone. By offering this option, PIA makes it easier for you to unblock Netflix.
- Strong focus on privacy and security
- Good price
- Fast and stable servers
If you want to try PIA, it’s good to know that they also offer a 30-day money-back guarantee. Read our full Private Internet Access review for more information!
Our Top 5 Netflix VPNs: Speed Test Results
Before we wrap up our comparison of the five best VPNs for Netflix, it’s worth looking at the speeds you can expect from each provider.
Below, you will find a summary of the speeds we recorded when testing these VPNs.
|Provider||Download speed (Mbps)||Upload speed (Mbps)||Ping|
How to Watch American Netflix With a VPN
A VPN does three things:
- It encrypts your internet traffic.
- Redirects all traffic via a remote server.
- Hides your location by changing your IP address.
When you connect to a US server, your traffic data is redirected through the United States. This makes Netflix believe you are located on American soil, giving you access to the US Netflix library.
If you’re wondering how to connect to Netflix with a VPN, we have a step-by-step guide. Click the button below for quick and easy instructions!
Can You Use a Free VPN For Netflix?
Although some free VPNs can bypass geo-restrictions, we generally don’t recommend using them for the following reasons:
- Your data and privacy could be compromised: Free VPN providers may sell the information they collect about you to other parties. In a bid to generate revenue to support their services, they will be more tempted to do this than paid providers.
- Poor customer service: Most free VPNs don’t meet high customer service standards. In fact, free services often won’t provide any customer service at all. This means they will be unable to help you if you need assistance accessing the US Netflix library or if you encounter any other issues.
- Fewer resources to outsmart Netflix: Most free VPNs don’t have the resources to one-up Netflix’s geo-restrictions. As a result, they can’t always unblock Netflix.
- Slow speeds: Even if a free VPN works, you’re likely to encounter loading and buffering issues because you are sharing a server with many other users. If you want to watch Netflix comfortably, a free service simply isn’t the best option.
If you’re not sure whether you want to pay for a VPN subscription yet, many of the best Netflix VPNs offer a free trial. This allows you to determine whether the provider is useful before committing to a long subscription.
What free VPNs can I use to unblock Netflix?
Although free VPNs are not ideal for streaming, we’ve conducted tests to determine the safest and best free Netflix VPNs. You can read our full review and see our test results in our best free Netflix VPNs article.
PrivadoVPN is the only free VPN that consistently managed to unblock Netflix at the time of writing. If you want to stream movies and series from the US Netflix library, try PrivadoVPN. The provider uses obfuscation technology to hide the fact that you’re using a VPN.
Click the orange button below to try PrivadoVPN.
Privado has great security features, including 256-bit AES encryption and a kill switch. The only drawback — which is to be expected with a free VPN — is that you have a 10 GB data limit each month. You can also only access servers in 12 different cities.
Still, PrivadoVPN is one of the best Netflix VPNs that is available at no cost.
Windscribe has paid subscription plans, but its free plan can unblock the US Netflix library. This is a hit-or-miss Netflix VPN. We tried several servers without success before we could connect to Netflix.
You get a 2GB monthly data limit when you sign up for Windscribe. If you submit your e-mail address, the data cap is lifted to 10GB.
While Windscribe says it doesn’t log user data, the provider suffered a security breach in July 2021 when Ukrainian authorities seized its VPN servers and a private key that could decrypt Windscribe users’ internet traffic. For this reason, we are hesitant to recommend Windscribe.
We initially had some issues trying to unblock Netflix with TunnelBear. After changing some settings (switching servers and protocols), we could access the Netflix libraries of Germany and the United Kingdom.
TunnelBear is relatively secure for a free service. It provides strong encryption and has apps for various operating systems, including Windows, macOS, and Android. You can also opt for TunnelBear browser extensions.
Unfortunately, TunnelBear has a data cap of 500Mb, which makes it unsuitable for streaming. A one-hour HD episode of your favorite show will require you to stream about 3GB of data.
TunnelBear can be a temporary option, but we don’t recommend it for watching Netflix long-term. For that, you’ll need one of the best Netflix VPNs we highlighted above.
Which VPNs don’t work with Netflix?
Netflix continues to upgrade its ability to detect VPN and proxy servers. So, the list of the best VPNs for Netflix is constantly changing. Even big players in the VPN industry can run into issues.
At the time of writing, these are some of the most well-known VPNs that are blocked by Netflix:
- HideMyAss! (HMA)
- VPN Unlimited
Why Doesn’t Netflix Work With Every VPN?
Netflix has contracts with producers and film distributors all over the world. Depending on the type of license it can acquire, some content may only be available in specific countries.
To enforce this licensing agreement, Netflix checks your IP address to determine your location and whether you should have access to certain content.
For example, if you use a German IP address to go online, you’ll get the German version of Netflix when you log in to your Netflix account. A VPN changes your IP address, thereby unblocking the Netflix libraries of other countries.
Netflix knows many people around the globe are using VPNs to bypass its geo-restrictions. That’s why it has systems to detect if many people are using the same IP addresses, and subsequently block them.
When Netflix blocks your IP address, instead of being able to watch movies or series, you may get an error message instructing you to turn off your proxy connection or unblocking tool to be able to use the platform.
Here’s what the error message typically looks like:
Netflix is trying to make all its TV shows and movies accessible worldwide by securing global licensing contracts. In time, Netflix users would have access to the same films and series.
It’ll take a while before this happens, though. Until then, you know the best VPNs for Netflix.
Can You Get a Netflix Discount With a VPN?
Did you know you can use a VPN to get a nice discount on Netflix?
We’ve done extensive research into the way prices for Netflix subscriptions vary in different countries.
By choosing a VPN server in a specific country, you could subscribe to Netflix as if you were in that country and score a discount.
This doesn’t affect the content you’ll be able to see on the platform. After all, you always get to see the version of Netflix that corresponds with your location. However, it can make a difference in terms of price.
Currently, it’s cheap to subscribe to Netflix with a Turkish IP address. You can subscribe to Netflix’s Basic plan for just 37.99 TL (around USD $2.12).
Subscribing with an Argentinian IP address can also get you a discount. Netflix’s Basic plan costs ARS 429 (approximately USD $3.25) at the time of writing. However, there is a caveat—you’ll need an Argentinian payment method.

Other Benefits of Using a Netflix VPN
Unblocking country-specific Netflix content is not the only benefit a VPN service has to offer. VPNs also support internet freedom, providing a safe and easy way to bypass censorship.
This makes it much harder for hackers, governments, or other parties to track or access your personal information. A VPN offers much-needed security, allowing you to surf the web safely.
Another important feature of a VPN is anonymity. Since a VPN hides your IP address, no one can determine your location and, ultimately, your identity.

Other Ways to Bypass Netflix’s Geo-Restrictions
Watching Netflix with Tor
The Tor browser routes your internet traffic through different servers worldwide. Each server adds a layer of encryption and anonymity.
However, Tor is not very suitable for streaming Netflix. Because the traffic has to travel through so many “nodes,” Tor can be quite slow.
Also, with Tor, you have no control over the location of the exit server (the last rerouting node). If you want to stream content from the American Netflix library, there is no way of ensuring that your server location will be in the US.
In other words, accessing the US Netflix library through Tor is a gamble with low odds. Streaming also requires a fair amount of data speed. For these reasons, we recommend using a VPN for Netflix over Tor.
Watch Netflix using Smart DNS
It’s also possible to access foreign Netflix libraries with Smart DNS.
All computers and websites have a unique IP address. This IP address is linked to a (host) name.
The Domain Name Server (DNS) keeps track of which website name belongs to which IP address. You can think of the DNS as the internet’s phonebook.
Smart DNS hides the location of your computer by routing DNS queries through a remote server. Using Smart DNS, you can connect to an American server and get an American IP address.
This is a good way to unblock Netflix and access the full US Netflix library, no matter where you are in the world.
Note: Unlike a VPN, Smart DNS does not encrypt and redirect your internet traffic.
Summary: The Best Ways to Unblock Netflix
There are several ways to bypass Netflix’s restrictions and access foreign Netflix libraries. Do you want to get the most out of your streaming subscription? Here are three ways to unblock Netflix:
- Use a VPN. With the right Netflix VPN, you can access the American Netflix library from anywhere in the world. NordVPN works especially well with Netflix and has many fast servers in the US.
- Use Smart DNS. With Smart DNS, you can change the virtual location of your computer and bypass Netflix’s geo-restrictions.
- Use an American proxy server. A proxy server redirects your internet traffic, allowing you to access the American Netflix library. However, proxy servers are often slow, and Netflix is quick to block them.
Remember, you need an active Netflix account to access any Netflix library. Using a VPN is the best and easiest way to watch Netflix freely and comfortably from anywhere in the world.
A good VPN provides freedom, anonymity, and security. In our books, the five best VPNs for Netflix are:
It’s possible to use a free VPN to stream Netflix, but we don’t recommend this for security reasons and due to low data caps.
Below, you’ll find quick answers to some common questions about unblocking Netflix with a VPN. Click on a question to see the answer. If you run into problems or have a specific question, leave a comment below, and we’ll help you out.
NordVPN is the overall best VPN for Netflix, but Surfshark, ExpressVPN, CyberGhost, and Private Internet Access (PIA) are also good options. These providers could successfully unblock the US Netflix library at the time of writing. They could also unblock Hulu, HBO Max, BBC iPlayer, Disney+, and other streaming platforms!
Netflix has identified the IP addresses of various VPN servers and blocks users when they connect using them. However, the best VPNs for Netflix have numerous servers for you to choose from to avoid detection.
Unless you’re in a country where using a VPN is prohibited, you’ve got nothing to worry about. This notwithstanding, Netflix discourages the use of VPNs and is actively trying to block VPN servers from accessing its servers. Check out our article on the legality of VPNs for more information.
Netflix only has the right to show certain content in certain countries. This is why the company enforces geo-restrictions and tries to block users from using VPNs to access blocked content. Netflix hopes to get global licenses for all the movies and TV shows on its platform, but that may not happen soon.
Many free VPNs don’t work with Netflix, because Netflix has blocked the IP addresses of their servers. Occasionally, a free VPN server might work for a while, but this typically doesn’t last long. In the unlikely scenario that they work, you have to contend with slow connections and low data limits.
Watching Netflix with a VPN is simple. Get a subscription with your provider of choice, connect to the right VPN server (for instance, a US server if you want to access the US Netflix library), and go to the Netflix website or app. For more information, check out our article on the best VPNs for Netflix.
Netflix may recognize that you’re trying to access its content with a VPN or proxy server. The company has a list of known IP addresses belonging to proxies and VPNs that it blocks. If you try to watch Netflix with a proxy or VPN and are unsuccessful, this may be why.
