Disney Plus is Disney’s official new streaming service that’ll launch in November 2019. Before then, however, the Dutch already have exclusive free access to all its content. For now, if you’re in the Netherlands, you’ll be able to watch your favourite Disney movie at any time.
Unfortunately, Disney Plus blocks the IP addresses of many VPN servers. Do you want to stream in a protected way without endangering your privacy and online safety? Then you’ll need a VPN that works with Disney Plus. Try NordVPN, for example:
Where Netflix once had a monopoly, new streaming services such as Amazon Prime and HBO GO have now popped up all over the place. One of the big newcomers is Disney Plus (Disney+), the official streaming service for everything Disney. You’ll find all the well-loved classics on there, but also content by Pixar, Marvel, Star Wars, National Geographic and more. Disney Plus isn’t openly available yet. The official launch in the United States, Canada and The Netherlands will be on the 12th of November, 2019. Over the course of the following two years, the service will become available in the rest of the world as well.
Even now, however, a select group of people already has access to the service: if you live in The Netherlands, you’ll be able to take part in the trial and watch Disney Plus for free up until November. In this article, we’ll tell you more about Disney Plus and how you can safely enjoy this brand new streaming service.
Disney Plus’s free trial period in The Netherlands
Disney decided to make its streaming service available to a select group of people two months prior to its official launch. In this case, anyone living in The Netherlands is in luck. If you’ve got a Dutch IP address, you can create an account and enjoy Disney Plus’s content for free as part of their trial run. Once November 12 rolls around, the Dutch will have to pay for their subscriptions just like everyone else, but for now they have exclusive access. The rest of the world will be able to make use of their Disney Plus subscription after the launch.
It seems that Disney’s new service is going to change the market. Not is as ‘happily ever after’ as it may seem, however. Due to some of the restrictions Disney Plus has placed on their website, it makes it increasingly hard for people using VPNs to reach their content.
How a VPN increases your online safety and freedom
A VPN (Virtual Private Network) helps you hide and change your IP address. This might not seem like much, but it’s incredibly important in terms of online privacy and safety. Your IP address carries all sorts of personal information, such as your location. Websites, along with every other party that has access to your online data, can read this information and adjust their content accordingly. Do you live in New York? Websites will know and show you ads for services in your local area. Are you currently in Paris? Then they might automatically send you on to the French version of their website. With a VPN, however, this isn’t necessarily the case.
VPNs create a secure tunnel between your device and the internet. This way, everything you do online happens more anonymously and safely. All your data traffic is sent through the tunnel, meaning third parties won’t be able to access it quite so easily. In short, a VPN gives you the opportunity to get some of your privacy back. Especially with big companies such as Google and Facebook collecting every bit of information they can find on their users, this extra bit of control can be immensely comforting and helpful.
Online restrictions and internet freedom
Aside from providing a sense of anonimity, a VPN can be a massive aid to people whose internet access is being restricted. Some countries have put up geographical restrictions that keep citizens from reaching specific websites such as news outlets or other online services. These limitations to people’s online freedom can be circumvented by using a VPN. If you pick a VPN server located in a country that embraces a free internet, you’ll browse the web with an IP address from that country and regain access. In short, a VPN gives you more online anonymity, better online safety, and increased online freedom.
Unfortunately, some websites, including Disney Plus, choose to block IP addresses that are known to belong to VPN services. This poses a problem for users who want to enjoy Disney Plus while maintaining their online safety. Because Disney doesn’t give people access to their content if they use a VPN, they’re forced to turn off their VPN to watch Disney Plus content. This means that, right now, if you live in The Netherlands and use a VPN to keep your online traffic safe, you’re forced to give up your secure internet connection in order to be able to watch Disney movies via the service. This is a definite drawback of Disney Plus.

How to get a VPN: a step-by-step guide
A VPN gives you the opportunity to surf the web safely, anonymously, and freely. Therefore, we advise any internet user to get themselves a trustworthy VPN. If you want to start using a VPN but aren’t quite sure how, you can follow the steps below:
- Check out our reviews and choose a trustworthy VPN provider (for example NordVPN)
- Get a subscription to the service and create an account
- Download the VPN software for your device’s OS (for example Windows, Linux or Mac)
- Sign in to the VPN software with the account you created
- Connect to a server by choosing one within the software and pressing the ‘Connect’ button
If you’ve successfully completed these steps, you’ll be connected to a VPN. You’re now able to safely navigate the web without everyone being able to look into your internet activity.
How to get access to Disney Plus
If you want to enjoy the Disney Plus free trial in The Netherlands, you’ll have to create a Disney Plus account. Luckily, this is quite an easy process. You only need a Dutch IP address, which you can most easily get by simply being in The Netherlands. Follow these steps to take part in the free trial:
- Head over to disneyplus.com/nl
- Click ‘Probeer gratis’ in the middle of the screen
- Fill in your email address and press ‘Akkoord en doorgaan’
- Create a strong password and press ‘Doorgaan’
- Choose a payment method, fill in your information (if you make sure to cancel your account before the end of the trial, you won’t be charged) and press ‘Akkoord en abonneren’
You now have early access to all Disney Plus content available so far. Browse the service for an old Disney classic, a cute Pixar short, or the latest Marvel blockbuster, click play, and enjoy!
If you aren’t currently in The Netherlands, the Disney Plus website will show a countdown to the official launch on November 12. You can sign up for the service early by choosing either a monthly or a yearly subscription and going through the process. If you do this, you’ll be able to enjoy the service once it’s available for your country.
Best VPNs for Disney Plus
In an ideal world, one wouldn’t have to give up one’s privacy or safety in order to be able to watch a movie. Still, this is the reality when it comes to many streaming services, among them Disney Plus. Disney is actively blocking IP addresses from famous VPN providers, making it impossible to watch content while enjoying the safety of a VPN.
Luckily, there are a few VPN providers with servers that allow you to watch Disney Plus. This way, you can watch this streaming service without sacrificing your safety. Here are three VPN providers that either managed to provide us with access to Disney Plus with their Dutch servers or promise to give access once the service is launched.
NordVPN is one of the biggest and best VPNs of the moment. It has over 5000 servers in over 60 countries. The speed of most NordVPN’s servers is great and it’s one of the most secure VPNs out there. Moreover, NordVPN is reliable and has a very user-friendly application. For us, the Dutch servers of this provider gave access to Disney Plus’s free trial. You can check out our more detailed review of this provider here, or go straight to their website by clicking the button in the box below.
- Excellent protection and a large network of servers
- Nice and pleasing application
- No logs
2. Webroot WiFi Security
Webroot WiFi Security’s Dutch servers allow you to access the Disney Plus website as well. This means that anyone from The Netherlands will be able to enjoy their free trial with Webroot. Supposedly, this should work for other countries as well once Disney Plus’s trial period is over. We should mention, however, that this provider keeps quite extensive connection logs. In other words, it doesn’t provide you with as much privacy and anonymity as you might want.
- Strong protocols and safety
- BrightCloud Filtering
- Keeps some logs
Like NordVPN, Surfshark is among our favorite VPN services. This provider is a relative newcomer, but has quickly built up an excellent reputation for itself. It doesn’t log your use, has plenty of servers and server locations and doesn’t limit the number of devices you can use with your description. Perhaps most attractively, it only costs a few dollars a month.
The Surfshark team claims that their services will work with Disney Plus after its launch. As of now, the free Dutch trial can’t be reached when using Surfshark in The Netherlands. Their unblocking possibilities aside, we consider Surfshark a very good VPN provider that will successfully protect your internet connection while also allowing you to stream as you normally would. Read more about this provider in our detailed review.
- Very user-friendly and works with Netflix and torrents
- 30 days money back guarantee. No questions asked!
- Cheap with many extra options
Still don’t have access to Disney Plus?
It could be the case that Disney Plus still isn’t working for you even when you’ve subscribed to one of these services. You’ll still be protected by the VPN, but you simply won’t be able to access your favorite content on Disney Plus. Does this mean you’ll have to turn off your VPN? Not necessarily. There are a few easy tricks you could try out to fix this problem:
- Delete your cookies and trackers or open a window in incognito mode before you visit the Disney Plus website. The trackers in your browser could prevent you from reaching the right page and getting access. By deleting your cookies or browsing in a private browsing window, it’ll appear as if you’re a new visitor, giving you access.
- Try a different VPN server. It could be the case that Disney has blocked the IP address of the VPN server you’re using from accessing their service. Luckily, many VPNs have multiple servers per server location, so you can easily switch to a different one. If you want to access the free trial while staying protected, for example, simply choose a different Dutch server. With some VPNs, you’ll be able to pick a different server manually. With others, you’ll have to reconnect until you’re assigned a different IP.
Important notice about the Disney Plus user agreement
In theory, you could use the VPNs mentioned above to watch Disney Plus in a country where you shouldn’t have access (yet). All it would take is to choose the right VPN server location. However, this could be in direct violation of Disney Plus’s terms and conditions. At the time of writing, the user agreement mentions that Disney Plus has geographical restrictions to their content and uses different technologies and methods to determine your physical location. This agreement doesn’t ban VPN use outright, but terms and conditions can change. There is a chance that Disney Plus will start ‘punishing’ users who try to access their services with a VPN, for example by blocking their account completely.
Before you try to use a VPN to access Disney Plus’s content from a different country, please check out the user agreement. You can find this at the bottom of the website. If the agreement has changed or is different in your country, you could be violating it by using a VPN to unblock content. Any possible consequences resulting from this are down to the user.
Disney Plus is bound to become a big success in the world of online streaming. It has diverse content ranging from Cinderella to Hannah Montana and from National Geographic documenteraries to Avengers: Infinity War. Still, if you won’t be able to enjoy this content without giving up the safety of your VPN, you might wonder whether it’s worth getting a subscription.
Luckily, some VPN providers are already trying to make their servers work with Disney Plus. With NordVPN and Surfshark, for example, you’ll be able to enjoy all Disney content while also staying protected with a secure internet connection. Do keep in mind that you’ll always need a (paid) Disney Plus subscription before you get access to the streaming service.
When you get a Disney Plus subscription, you’ll have to agree with the company’s terms and conditions. Although those don’t seem to mention VPNs at this moment, agreements can change. Keep in mind that using a VPN to unblock Disney Plus content from another country might be in violation of Disney’s rules.
