Disney Plus is Disney’s official new streaming service that first launched in the US, Canada and The Netherlands in November 2019. Other countries, too, are slowly getting access to the platform, although for some parts of the world this might take another year or two. If you live in a country where the service has been launched already, you’ll be able to watch your favorite Disney movie at any time.
Unfortunately, Disney Plus blocks the IP addresses of many VPN servers. Do you want to stream in a protected way without endangering your privacy and online safety? Then you’ll need a VPN that works with Disney Plus. Try Surfshark, for example:
Where Netflix once had a monopoly, new streaming services such as Amazon Prime and HBO GO have now popped up all over the place. One of the big newcomers is Disney Plus (Disney+), the official streaming service for everything Disney. You can find all the well-loved classics on there, but also content by Pixar, Marvel, Star Wars, National Geographic and even Hamilton: The Musical.
Disney Plus officially launched in the United States, Canada and The Netherlands on the 12th of November, 2019. Some other countries, such as India, have also gotten access since then. Over the course of the coming two years, the service will become available in the rest of the world. In this article, we’ll tell you more about Disney Plus and how you can safely enjoy this brand new streaming service.
Disney Plus: not yet available everywhere
Over the coming two years, Disney Plus will be launching in different parts of the world. Although people in the USA, Canada, Australia, New Zealand, Puerto Rico, India and some European countries already have access, there are many others who’ll have to wait months until the release. In other words, anyone living in the right country is in luck.
If you’ve got an American or Dutch IP address, for example, you can create an account and enjoy Disney Plus’s content for just $6,99 (or €6,99, depending on where you come from) a month. The rest of the world will only be able to make use of their Disney Plus subscription at a later point.
Disney’s new service has brought some significant changes to the streaming market. The company announced that they’ve gained over 28 million users in the first three months since its launch. This was much higher than their predictions. In December, experts already spoke about how many people were canceling their Netflix subscriptions to get a Disney Plus account instead. Due to this behavior, Netflix has already lost over a million subscribers.
Not all is as ‘happily ever after’ for Disney as it may seem, however. Due to the restrictions Disney Plus has placed on their website, it’s increasingly difficult for people who use VPNs to reach their content.
How a VPN increases your online safety and freedom
A VPN (Virtual Private Network) helps you hide and change your IP address. This might not seem like much, but it’s incredibly important for your online privacy and safety. Your IP address reveals all sorts of personal information about you, such as your location. Websites, along with every other party that has access to your online data, can read this information and adjust their content accordingly.
Do you live in New York? Websites will know and show you ads for services in your local area. Are you currently in Paris? Then they might automatically send you on to the French version of their website. With a VPN, however, this isn’t necessarily the case.
VPNs create a secure tunnel between your device and the internet. This way, everything you do online happens more anonymously and safely. All your data traffic is sent through the tunnel, meaning third parties won’t be able to access it quite so easily.
In short, a VPN gives you the opportunity to get some of your privacy back. Especially with big companies such as Google and Facebook collecting all information they can find on their users, this extra bit of control can be immensely comforting and helpful.
Online restrictions and internet freedom
Aside from providing a sense of anonymity, a VPN can be a massive aid to people whose internet access is being restricted. Some countries have put up geographical restrictions that keep citizens from reaching specific websites such as news outlets or other online services. These limitations to people’s online freedom can be circumvented with a VPN.
If you pick a VPN server located in a country that embraces a free internet, you’ll be able to browse the web with an IP address from that country and regain access. In short, a VPN gives you more online anonymity, better online safety, and increased online freedom.
Unfortunately, some websites, including Disney Plus, choose to block IP addresses that are known to belong to VPN services. This poses a problem for users who want to enjoy Disney Plus while maintaining their online safety.
Because Disney doesn’t give people access to their content when they use a VPN, they’re forced to turn off that VPN to watch Disney Plus content. In other words, if you use a VPN to keep your online traffic safe, you’re forced to give up your secure internet connection in order to be able to watch Disney movies via the service. This is a definite drawback of Disney Plus.

How to get a VPN: a step-by-step guide
A VPN gives you the opportunity to surf the web safely, anonymously, and freely. Therefore, we advise any internet user to get themselves a trustworthy VPN. If you want to start using a VPN but aren’t quite sure how, you can follow the steps below:
- Check out our reviews and choose a trustworthy VPN provider (for example Surfshark)
- Get a subscription to the service and create an account
- Download the VPN software for your device’s OS (for example Windows, Linux or Mac)
- Sign in to the VPN software with the account you created in step 2
- Connect to a server by choosing one within the software and pressing the ‘Connect’ button
If you’ve successfully completed these steps, you’ll be connected to a VPN. You’re now able to safely navigate the web without your internet activity being visible to just about anyone.
How to get access to Disney Plus
If you want to enjoy all content on Disney Plus, you’ll have to create a Disney Plus account. Luckily, this is quite easy. You only need an IP address located in a country where Disney Plus has already been released, which you can most easily get by simply being in that country. Moreover, Disney Plus offers a free seven day trial for everyone joining the service. Follow these steps to get a Disney Plus subscription:
- Head over to disneyplus.com
- Click ‘Start free trial’ on the left side of the screen (or ‘Buy now‘ if you wish to get the complete package, including Hulu and ESPN+, although you won’t be able to get a free trial with this option)
- Fill in your email address and press ‘Agree and continue’
- Create a strong password and press ‘Continue’
- Choose your subscription (monthly or annually) and a payment method (credit card or Paypal), fill in your information (if you make sure to cancel your account before the end of the seven day trial, you won’t be charged) and press ‘Agree and subscribe’
You now have access to all Disney Plus content available so far. Browse the service for an old Disney classic, a cute Pixar short, the official recording of Hamilton, the latest Marvel blockbuster, or the newest Disney Plus originals. Click play, and enjoy!
If you are in a country where Disney Plus hasn’t been launched yet, you won’t get access to all Disney Plus content. You’ll be able to make an account, but encounter an error that the service might not have launched in your country yet. Of course, you’ll have full access with that account once it does become available on that location. Although there is no launch date for every country in the world so far, here are the dates that we do know:
|United States, Canada, The Netherlands||November 12 2019 (launched)|
|Australia, New Zealand, Puerto Rico||November 19 2019 (launched)|
|India||March 15 2020 (launched early due to Corona outbreak)|
|Austria, France, Germany, Ireland, Italy, Spain, Switzerland, United Kingdom||March 24 2020 (launched early due to Corona outbreak)|
|Belgium, Denmark, Finland, Iceland, Norway, Portugal, Sweden||Summer 2020|
Best VPNs for Disney Plus
In an ideal world, one wouldn’t have to give up one’s privacy or safety in order to be able to watch a movie. Still, this is the reality when it comes to many streaming services, including Disney Plus. Disney actively blocks IP addresses from famous VPN providers, making it impossible to watch content while being protected by a VPN.
Luckily, there are a few VPN providers with servers that allow you to watch Disney Plus. This way, you can watch this streaming service without sacrificing your safety. Here are three VPN providers that can give you access to Disney Plus.
Surfshark is among our favorite VPN services. This provider is a relative newcomer, but has quickly built an excellent reputation for itself. It doesn’t log your use, has plenty of servers and server locations and doesn’t limit the number of devices you can use with your subscription. Perhaps most attractively, it only costs a few dollars a month.
The special thing about Surfshark is that all their servers, regardless of their location, will give you access to the website and content of Disney Plus. We consider Surfshark a very good VPN provider that will successfully protect your internet connection while also allowing you to stream as you normally would. Read more about this provider in our detailed review or go directly to the Surfshark website by clicking the banner below.
- Very user-friendly and works with Netflix and torrents
- 30 days money back guarantee. No questions asked!
- Cheap with many extra options
Just like Surfshark, ExpressVPN specifically aims to provide its users with access to the Disney Plus website. If you pick the right ExpressVPN VPN-server, you’ll be able to easily and safely enjoy the many films and series on Disney Plus (as long as you’re subscribed to the streaming platform). This goes for any ExpressVPN server in the US, Canada, The Netherlands, and Australia.
Since ExpressVPN is one of the fastest VPNs of this moment, you probably won’t even notice a difference in internet speed. No extra buffering needed! If you’d like to know more about ExpressVPN, you can read a full review of their VPN service right here or visit their website directly.
- Very easy to use VPN
- Perfect for anonymous browsing, downloading, and streaming (i.e. Netflix)
- 3000+ servers in 94 countries
NordVPN is one of the biggest and best VPNs of the moment. It has over 5000 servers in over 60 countries. The speed of most NordVPN’s servers is great. Moreover, it’s one of the most secure VPNs out there. NordVPN is reliable and has a very user-friendly application.
If you wish to watch Disney Plus, you can use American, Dutch, or Australian VPN servers to do this. In the future, more servers might be able to allow you to watch Disney Plus while keeping your connection secure. You can check out our more detailed review of this provider here, or go straight to their website by clicking the button in the box below.
- Excellent protection and a large network of servers
- Nice and pleasing application
- No logs
Still don’t have access to Disney Plus?
It could be the case that Disney Plus still isn’t working for you even when you’ve subscribed to one of these services. You’ll still be protected by the VPN, but simply won’t be able to access your favorite content on Disney Plus. Does this mean you’ll have to turn off your VPN? Not necessarily. There are a few easy tricks you could try to fix this problem:
- Delete your cookies and trackers or open a window in incognito mode before you visit the Disney Plus website. The trackers in your browser could prevent you from reaching the right page and getting access. By deleting your cookies or browsing in a private browsing window, it’ll appear as if you’re a new visitor, giving you access.
- Try a different VPN server. It could be the case that Disney has blocked the IP address of the VPN server you’re using, so it can’t access their service. Luckily, many VPNs have multiple servers per server location, so you can easily switch to a different one. If you want to access the streaming platform while staying protected, simply choose a different server. With some VPNs, you’ll be able to pick a different server manually. With others, you’ll have to reconnect until you’re assigned a different IP. If you want to check which IP address you’re currently using, you can find that out by heading over to our “What is my IP?” tool.
Important notice about the Disney Plus user agreement
In theory, you could use the VPNs mentioned above to watch Disney Plus in a country where you shouldn’t have access (yet). All it would take is choosing the right VPN server location. However, this could be in direct violation of Disney Plus’s terms and conditions.
At the time of writing, the user agreement mentions that Disney Plus has geographical restrictions to their content and uses different technologies and methods to determine your physical location. This agreement doesn’t ban VPN use outright, but terms and conditions can change. There is a chance that Disney Plus will start ‘punishing’ users who try to access their services with a VPN, for example by blocking their account completely.
Before you try to use a VPN to access Disney Plus’s content from a different country, please check out the user agreement. You can find this at the bottom of the website. If the agreement has changed or is different in your country, you could be violating it by using a VPN to unblock content. Any possible consequences resulting from this are down to the user.
Disney Plus is a big success in the world of online streaming. It has diverse content ranging from Cinderella to Hamilton and from National Geographic documentaries to Avengers: Infinity War. Moreover, it’s one of the cheapest services out there. Still, if you won’t be able to enjoy this content without giving up the safety of your VPN, you might wonder whether it’s worth getting a subscription.
Luckily, some VPN providers have servers that work with Disney Plus, anyway. With Surfshark, ExpressVPN, and NordVPN for example, you’ll be able to enjoy all Disney content while also staying protected with a secure internet connection. Do keep in mind that you’ll always need a (paid) Disney Plus subscription before you get access to the streaming service.
When you get a Disney Plus subscription, you’ll have to agree with the company’s terms and conditions. Although those don’t seem to mention VPNs at this moment, agreements can change. Keep in mind that using a VPN to unblock Disney Plus content from another country might be in violation of Disney’s rules.
