In a move set to ramp up cybersecurity innovation, leading virtual network provider (VPN) NordVPN has announced the launch of NordLabs, an experimental platform aimed at developing cutting-edge technologies.

In a press release on Monday, NordVPN said NordLabs will “explore emerging technologies, such as AI, to create new tools and services.” Users who sign up for NordLabs will get to test these experimental projects and leave feedback.

The first products from NordLabs will be launched in September.

A Launchpad for Innovation

NordLabs will give NordVPN’s engineers and developers a broader playground for innovation.

“New emerging technologies raise challenges for cybersecurity, privacy, and internet freedom, but at the same time, they bring new opportunities. NordLabs will allow us to have additional flexibility when it comes to the development of experimental tools and services,” Vykintas Maknickas, the head of product strategy at Nord Security, said.

“We do not expect all projects appearing in NordLabs will later become fully maintained standalone products, but we are thrilled about the opportunity to curb cutting-edge technologies for better internet,” he added.

The experimental platform will also serve as an access point for early adopters and tech enthusiasts, offering them exclusive access to Nord’s innovative projects before they reach mainstream audiences.

Nord said its team is working on “several projects” at NordLabs. One of them is a machine learning-based tool called Sonar.

“Sonar is a browser extension that detects phishing emails. Sonar will let users know how likely the received email is a phishing scam and point out which aspects of the email affected that decision,” Nord said.

Nord is also working on another tool that can identify AI-generated images.

To sign up for NordLabs, join the waiting list, and you’ll be notified once new projects are ready for public testing.

Nord’s ‘Commitment to Innovation’

The launch of NordLabs underlines Nord’s commitment to cutting-edge innovation. The company was recently granted its 100th patent by The United States Patent and Trademark Office — all registered within three years — marking a major milestone.

Nord has been at the forefront of innovation in the VPN space. Its VPN service comes with cutting-edge tools like Threat Protection and a free meshnet service. Read our NordVPN review to learn about our experience with this VPN and how it performed in our tests.
