2023 Mexican Grand Prix: Checo Fights for his 2024 Seat
As we head into Checo’s home race, the pressure has never been greater on the Mexican. He needs to perform if he wants to keep his race seat for next season.
He’s been far from his best, but his goal is clear: keep second place in the championship, or he loses his seat to Daniel Ricciardo next year.
Hamilton being disqualified in Austin is exactly what Checo needed to bide him some time. The gap to Lewis now increases to 39 points. It doesn’t mean that he’s safe, but there’s still a fierce battle on the horizon.
Hamilton has been quick recently, and there’s no doubt that he’ll be giving Checo a tough time in the final couple of races.
US Grand Prix: Masterclass in Strategy
The United States Grand Prix was a classic strategic battle. Max Verstappen had his lap time deleted in Qualifying, which meant that he started the race from 6th place in a shocking twist.
Charles Leclerc started in pole position, but there was little he could do as Lando Norris sent his McLaren steaming down the inside of the Ferrari into turn one. It was a horrible start for the Monegasque, and eventually, he found himself in fourth place.
Verstappen was charging his way through the field, but when it came to the first round of pit stops, things got interesting. Norris and Verstappen took different strategies, with the Brit opting for the Hard tires (1-stop) and Max going for another set of Medium tires (2-stops).
However, as the race progressed, McLaren decided to cover their bases and brought Lando in for another stop. But they put another set of Hard tires on the McLaren. Red Bull responded immediately, and Verstappen took the lead off Norris and started his charge to the finish line.
Don’t Sleep on Hamilton
But there was a dark horse in the race. Lewis Hamilton had been quietly making his way into the fight. The Brit was also on a two-stop strategy, but he had the faster Medium tires fitted to his Mercedes for the final stint.
He quickly disposed of Norris, who was nursing his older hard tires and set his sights on the lead of the race. Verstappen was still out in front, but he had issues — the Dutchman had been complaining about his brakes for the entire Grand Prix.
In the closing stages of the race, it was clear that there was a problem. Hamilton was closing the gap rapidly! But, in the end, it wasn’t enough, Verstappen took victory by just over a second, with Hamilton in second, and Norris in third.
However, it wasn’t over yet. A couple of hours after the chequered flag fell, the FIA announced that Lewis Hamilton and Charles Leclerc had been disqualified for running their cars too low. This promoted Carlos Sainz to third place.
