2023 MotoGP Catalan GP: What to Expect
The Styrian mountains provided us with another incredible race full of drama last time out at the Austrian Grand Prix. Francesco Bagnaia threw down the gauntlet with his third Sprint/Grand Prix double victory of the season — now putting the Italian 62 points in the lead of the championship standings.
Brad Binder was his closest rival out on track, as the South African tried to pressure the Ducati rider throughout the race. In the end, though, Baganaia was simply too fast and too cool under the pressure.
Baganaia is gunning for the title, which is firmly within his reach now. At this time last season, he was 91 points behind championship leader Fabio Quatararo. Bagnaia came back to win the title in 2022. While that does show how powerful the Italian duo has been this season, it also proves one other thing — it’s not over yet.
Bagnaia won the championship last season by overcoming a larger points deficit than what his rivals have right now. If the Italian takes his foot off the gas now, he could lose out on this season’s title. We could also see the title fight swing around at any point if the other riders step up to the plate.
In the championship standings, 1 point separated second and third place. Jorge Martin has had a couple of difficult races, and Marco Bezzecchi has improved his form recently, finishing second in Austria. This battle will continue at the Catalan GP, but Bezzecchi will hope to steal some points from Bagnaia to start closing the gap too.
But, they’re being hunted by the dark horse — Brad Binder. Binder has had some astonishing performances recently, and he’s slowly been reeling in the pair fighting over second place in the standings.

Silly season kicks off
Austria marked the start of a major driver transfer market shake-up for MotoGP. It all started with Brad Binder being rewarded with a new contract by Red Bull KTM, keeping him with the Austrian outfit until at least 2026.
Binder’s recent performances — especially his most recent performance at the team’s home race, mean that he’s the favorite rider at KTM, and he’s likely to partner with up-and-coming superstar Pedro Acosta in the near future.
Elsewhere, Marco Bezzecchi has been the talk of the town following his performances this season. Pramac has shown interest in the Italian, but his first choice is to remain with the VR46 team. However, Pramac’s sponsorship requires them to have an Italian rider. Should Bezzecchi reject them for VR46, Morbidelli is their second choice.
Johann Zarco has also signed a two-year deal with LCR, replacing Alex Rins. However, we’re still waiting for official confirmation on this one.
