What to Expect at the 2023 F1 British Grand Prix
As the drivers and teams head to Silverstone, the F1 community is still recovering from the adrenaline rush that was the Austrian Grand Prix. The entire weekend was chaotic and exciting, which made for some great entertainment.
A rain-slicked Sprint
The Red Bull Ring was a Sprint venue, and Max Verstappen lined up in pole position with his teammate Sergio Perez alongside him. The rain-soaked circuit left all the drivers on edge as they waited for the five red lights to go out. Perez attacked his teammate into turn one, and Max fought back on the following straight, but there were some sketchy moments between the two.
As the track started to dry out, cars were struggling with overheated intermediate tires. George Russell was the first to jump for the slick tires — a perfect strategy call, as it meant that he was up to 3 seconds per lap faster than the cars ahead of him. A couple of other cars followed, but in the end, they ran out of laps to challenge the leaders.
Verstappen bolted away and managed to finish the 24-lap race with a mighty 23-second lead over his teammate. Carlos Sainz rounded off the podium with a brilliant result in the Ferrari.
A pulse-pounding Grand Prix
Despite the rain staying away from the Red Bull Ring for the Grand Prix, the race was still an incredible spectacle. The cars followed each other closely, and we saw a couple of great on-track battles throughout the race.
Perez had another terrible qualifying session after being knocked out in Q2. It was the fifth time in nine races that the Mexican had not reached Q3 (all of which his teammates got pole position in). The pressure was on, but luckily he managed to deliver a stellar drive to overtake the pack and finish in 3rd place.
Max Verstappen was so far ahead of the competition that he could pit for a brand new set of soft tires on the second last lap, still emerge in the lead of the race, and set the fastest lap to claim the extra World Championship point.
Several drivers were penalized for exceeding track limits during the race. But it was only after the Grand Prix that the FIA was able to fully investigate 1200 incidents — giving post-race penalties to eight drivers. This slightly altered the official classification of the Grand Prix, but the podium remained unchanged.
Austrian Grand Prix results
| Position | Driver | Team |

| 1st | Max Verstappen | Red Bull Racing |
| 2nd | Charles Leclerc | Ferrari |
| 3rd | Sergio Perez | Red Bull Racing |
| 4th | Lando Norris | McLaren Mercedes |
| 5th | Fernando Alonso | Aston Martin |
Silverstone rundown
The Red Bull Ring gave us quite a mixed result, with Aston Martin and Mercedes staying quiet, and Ferrari and McLaren showing promising pace. But that’s mainly down to the nature of the circuit.
Mercedes has confirmed that they have the biggest upgrade package of the season ready and waiting for them in Silverstone, so expect them to hit the track running this weekend! Aston Martin has their factory right next door, so they’re sure to bring some upgraded parts to the table as well.
McLaren is running a special chrome livery this weekend as a throwback to the 2000s, and Daniel Ricciardo will be putting in some miles for Red Bull during practice.
Brad Pitt gets his own garage
In some alternative F1 news, Brad Pitt has his own garage at Silverstone this weekend. Filming for his new F1 movie, Apex, helmed by Top Gun: Maverick director Joseph Kosinski, will take place on-site for the first time at the British Grand Prix.
The movie features stunt drivers in modified F2 cars (looking like F1 cars) and their own custom garage in the pit lane for characters Sonny Hayes and Joshua Pearce.
