2023 Dutch Grand Prix Preview: Top Stories, What Happened in Belgium?
Max Verstappen took another dominant victory in Belgium as his RB19 blasted its way around the infamous Spa-Francorchamps circuit. Even a 5-place grid penalty for a gearbox change couldn’t stop the Dutchman as he flew into the lead of the race shortly after the start. There was no stopping him, as he took victory when the checkered flag fell on lap 44.
His teammate, Sergio Perez, finally found some good fortune as he finished in second place. Getting back on the podium will do wonders for Checo’s confidence as the F1 circus heads into the second half of the season. Checo took the lead from Charles Leclerc early on in the race, but he couldn’t do much to keep his teammate at bay.
Charles Leclerc coasted his Ferrari home in third place after starting in pole position. Although the Monegasque was incredibly quick in Qualifying, there was no way he could keep the rocketship Red Bulls behind him in the race.
With Verstappen taking his 8th victory in a row, he’s taking aim at matching Sebastian Vettel’s record of nine consecutive Grand Prix victories. This could be a history-making weekend!

Although Spa was another whitewash with a Red Bull 1-2, there were signs of the fast-charging Bulls losing their edge over the rest of the grid. In qualifying, Verstappen was fastest, but Leclerc wasn’t far off. The gap between Red Bull and the rest of the grid has gradually been decreasing over the course of the season.
On top of that, Red Bull has confirmed that they brought their final upgrade of the season to the Belgian Grand Prix, which opens the door for other teams to catch up in the remaining races.
With an enforced shutdown during the summer break, none of the teams would have brought additional upgrades of note this weekend. However, the Zandvoort circuit is a completely different layout than Spa.
With a short lap and tight and twisty sections, a car with high downforce will have a much bigger advantage over Red Bull. The likes of Ferrari, Mercedes, Aston Martin, and especially McLaren could shine this weekend.
