What to Expect at the 2023 F1 Hungarian Grand Prix
Silverstone did not disappoint! As expected, it was one of the best races of the season. From Brad Pitt’s special appearance to the action on track, the British Grand Prix was an action-packed event.
It’s been a long two-week break, and fans can’t wait for the action to return in Hungary! Let’s take a quick look at what happened in Silverstone.
McLaren rises to the challenge
Max Verstappen put his Red Bull in pole position once again, but the McLarens of Lando Norris and Oscar Piastri offered a challenge for the Dutchman. The British crowd erupted as their home hero Norris put his car into provisional pole position momentarily — until Verstappen smashed his lap time out of the park.
At the start of the race, Norris made a dash off the line and got the jump on Verstappen. The Brit once again gave his home crowd something to cheer about as he put his papaya and chrome McLaren into the lead of the race, with Piastri following closely behind the Red Bull. However, as soon as DRS was activated, Norris could do little to hold onto the lead of the race as the Red Bull charged past him on the fifth lap.
Just after the halfway point of the Grand Prix, a safety car triggered a flurry of pit stops. Some drivers got lucky with the timing, while others suffered. Lewis Hamilton was one of those who were fortunate enough to benefit from the safety car, as he was bumped up to third place with brand new soft tires fitted to his Mercedes.
Norris survived an onslaught from the seven-time world champion to drive his McLaren home in second place behind Verstappen. Piastri managed to hang on for a brilliant fourth place, and the second Mercedes of George Russell came home in fifth place.

Heated action at the Hungaroring
With the British Grand Prix confirming our suspicions of McLaren’s recent upgrades, it’s clear that they have become clear title contenders! They could be challenging for more podiums, and in some cases, even some wins going forward. The Hungaroring is a tight and twisty track, which is not ideal for Red Bull’s car.
However, Red Bull has confirmed that they are bringing a significant upgrade to the Hungarian Grand Prix. Not only will it make a big visible difference to the car, but it should also make the car two-tenths faster! Perhaps Sergio Perez can finally make it back into Q3?
A familiar face returns
In other exciting news, a familiar face will be back on the grid at the Hungarian Grand Prix. With Nyck De Vries being relieved of his duties at Alpha Tauri, Daniel Ricciardo will be replacing the Dutchman for the remainder of the season. Ricciardo drove the Red Bull in a Pirelli tire test at Silverstone following the British Grand Prix. According to sources at Red Bull, his lap times were quick enough to make it to the front row of the grid — something that Perez has failed to do since the Miami Grand Prix in May.
On Monday afternoon, it was announced that the Australian would return to the grid with the team where he started his F1 career. Will McLaren pose a threat to Red Bull in Hungary? Can Daniel Ricciardo prove his worth and beat his new teammate? We’ll find out on Sunday!
