2023 US Grand Prix: McLaren Hunting Victory
Max Verstappen won his third World Championship in Qatar. The Dutchman finished second in the Sprint, which gave him enough points to be mathematically out of reach of anyone else in the championship standings.
Verstappen has been dominant this season, winning the championship with five rounds to go and breaking several records (including 10 consecutive race wins) to go down in the history books.
But there was another big story on Saturday. Oscar Paistri, the Australian rookie, won the Sprint from pole position with an incredible performance. Piastri has been in great form, and he’s aiming to break Lewis Hamilton’s record for most points scored by a rookie in a season (109). Piastri is currently on 83 and needs another 26.
There was more drama in the Grand Prix. Verstappen started on pole and was attacked by both Lewis Hamilton and George Russell at turn one. But, the two Mercedes teammates made contact, and Hamilton was sent careering into the gravel trap and out of the race.
Verstappen won the Grand Prix, and the two McLarens made their way through the field to finish in second and third place to make up for their disappointing Qualifying session on Friday. It’s the Papaya team’s second double podium in a row, and that’s why they’re the biggest threat to Red Bull in Austin!
Checo’s seat under threat
Sergio Perez had another horror weekend. Following on from his nightmare race in Japan, the Mexican dealt with even more trouble as he crashed out of the Sprint on Saturday.
On Sunday, he could only manage one 10th place while his teammate stormed off to win the race. He’s scored just one point in the last two races compared to Verstappen’s 57!
As we know, Red Bull is a cutthroat team. They’ve offered Checo an ultimatum, considering his drop in performance this season.
If he doesn’t secure second place in the championship (Hamilton is 30 points behind him), he will be replaced by Daniel Ricciardo in 2024.
