What to Expect: Tour de Pologne 2023
Tour de Pologne is the biggest cycling event in Poland. This Tour will be a good one for the climbers, especially with the tough 11-kilometer summit finish on stage 2’s Orlinek climb, known locally as the “Wailing Wall” — it could prove to be decisive in the overall results.
However, first, the Tour opens with a sprint-focused first stage in Poznań. They’ll need to make the most of this early opportunity because the Tour de Pologne then heads into the challenging terrain of the Karkonosze Mountains. It’s not until stage 6 that the sprinters will come back into play as they head into a crucial time trial before the final day’s push.
Joao Almeida (UAE Team Emirates) won the Tour de Pologne in 2021, and Ethan Hayter (Ineos Grenadiers) won the event last year. These are both names to keep an eye out for as they get geared up for the 80th edition of the Polish race.
Almedia’s teammate, Rafal Majka, is also penciled in to start the Tour de Pologne. The home hero took victory in the Polish race in 2014, and he would love a repeat performance nearly a decade later. Another stellar rider to keep your eyes on is the up-and-coming young French climber Lenny Martinez (Groupama-FDJ) — he recently beat Mike Woods (Israel-Premier Tech) to win the CIC-Mont Ventoux.
The Tour de Pologne is considered to be the ultimate preparation race for Vuelta a España, which starts on August 26, 2023. Nevertheless, there’s plenty to fight for in the hilly stages of Poland!
