MotoGP Americas Grand Prix 2024: What to Expect
MotoGP is racing at COTA in Austin this weekend. But there’s one question on everyone’s minds heading into this Grand Prix: will the “King of COTA” return to claim his throne?
Ever since the inaugural MotoGP COTA race in 2013, Marquez has dominated this circuit. The Spaniard has won seven races in Austin including: 2013, 2014, 2015, 2016, 2017, 2018, and 2021.
Last year, he had to sit out of the Americas Grand Prix due to injury. So far, we’ve seen a revitalized Marquez in 2024 as he has settled into his new Gresini Racing team — will he be fighting for the win this weekend?
2024 title fight is unpredictable
The title fight for the 2024 season is still up in the air. Jorge Martin currently leads the standings after winning the Portuguese Grand Prix and finishing third in the Sprint. He’s still in excellent form this year, and he’s determined to secure that title.
Currently, his closest rival is Brad Binder. Binder was in the fight for the title momentarily last season, but he dropped out towards the end of the season. In 2024, he started off strong with his Red Bull KTM bike. With two podiums and 42 points to his name so far, he’s keeping in touch with Martin in the standings.
The Ducati Lenovo pair are also fighting tooth and nail to stay in the fight. Reigning champion Pecco Bagnaia had a nightmare race in Portugal, retiring from the Grand Prix and finishing fourth in the Sprint. But his teammate Enea Bastianini has been going strong. Basti finished second and sixth to score some valuable championship points.
Remember to keep an eye on rookie Pedro Acosta this weekend! The young Spaniard got his first podium at the Portuguese Grand Prix last weekend, and we’ll definitely see more of him in the coming rounds!
