What to Expect From the 2023 Australian Open Finals
The women’s division has been posted to the board, with Belarus’s Aryna Sabalenka set to take on Kazakhstan’s Elena Rybakina in the finals. But the road to the end of the Aussie tournament furrowed the brows of many women’s tennis fans — when No. 1 Iga Swiatek was ousted in the fourth round by the No. 22 Rybakina, it became anybody’s tourney.
Her Polish counterpart, Magda Linette, certainly made waves en route to the semifinals but came up short against Sabalenka, who’s been battering her way through the competition.
From the outset, though, the 2023 Australian Open had a noticeable absence of regular women’s talent. Venus Williams withdrew early due to injury during training, while the 2019 and 2021 Australian Open winner, Naomi Osaka, pulled out for reasons unknown — though she had several injury-related withdrawals in 2022, and a notable mental health pullout in 2021. Romanian Simona Halep was out of contention last year for doping but was reportedly out for the year’s first Grand Slam following nose surgery.
As for the men’s singles, to not many’s surprise, nine-time champ Novak Djokovic has emerged as the favorite to take the 2023 Australian Open. He’ll be one step closer to pushing his record to a 10th win Down Under if he can knock his way past Tommy Paul, the unseeded American who’s turned out to be quite the wild card in his first appearance at Rod Laver Arena.
On the other side, we find Stefanos Tsitsipas vs. Karen Khachanov. While Tsitsipas is no stranger to the semifinals in Melbourne, he’s never reached a title match — the Greek was knocked out in the penultimate round by Rafal Nadal in 2019, and Daniil Medvedev last year. The Russian-born Khachanov has never broken past the third round, which puts Tsitsipas as the favorite to advance.
Whether or not Djokovic continues his dominance on the court or Paul breaks out of his underdog collar remains to be seen. The stage is certainly set for an explosive finals weekend Down Under.
