F1 Saudi Arabia Grand Prix: What to Expect
Max Verstappen trumped the field with a massive 22-second victory in Bahrain last weekend. His teammate Sergio Perez brought his RB20 home for a stunning 1-2 finish. It’s the best possible way for Red Bull to open their 2024 account — but what about the rest of the field?
Ferrari and Mercedes both struggled with performance issues during the race. Carlos Sainz had a pretty smooth race, but his teammate Charles Leclerc suffered brake issues, which caused him to drop off the pace. Meanwhile, both the Mercedes cars suffered similar problems with their battery systems, leaving them unable to compete with the frontrunners.
The Jeddah Corniche circuit is a different beast, though. Red Bull might not have the same advantage that they did in Bahrain. If Mercedes and Ferrari can sort out their technical gremlins, they stand a chance at snatching a win in the Saudi GP!
Complete chaos after just one race
Elsewhere, there was plenty of drama. The newly rebranded VCARB (formerly Alpha Tauri) teammates were furious with one another. Yuki Tsunoda was asked to let Daniel Ricciardo pass in the closing stages of the race. The Japanese driver was left furious when his teammate was unable to make progress up the field and the two nearly collided during the cooldown lap as tempers flared.
There’s also been plenty of drama at Red Bull. Christian Horner has been under investigation prior to the season even starting. Things seem to be falling apart at the team with rumors of their 2026 engine supplier, Ford, looking to pull out of the deal early.
There have also been whispers of Verstappen moving to Mercedes to replace Lewis Hamilton next year. The Dutchman has an exit clause in his current contract (until 2028), which allows him to leave the team if Helmut Marko also leaves.
