2023 MotoGP Austrian GP: What to Expect
The British Grand Prix was yet another exhilarating one. We always enjoy the racing at Silverstone, and this year did not disappoint — just as expected. MotoGP returned with a bang after a long summer break.
Aleix Espargaro took a jaw-dropping victory on Sunday as he charged from 12th place on the grid. There was little that championship leader Pecco Bagnaia could do as the Aprilia bike made a daring overtake on the final lap to secure victory.
It was a rare loss for Bagnaia, but his title rivals struggled during the race, which means that he gained points in the title race. He’s currently sitting in the lead, 41 points clear of Jorge Martin in second place.
Espargaro had high expectations for the 2023 season following his performance last year. However, with just two podiums to his name this year, he has admitted that his ambitions might have been too great — leading to more mistakes this season. But, could Silverstone have been a turning point for the Spaniard? We’ll see how he fares in Austria this weekend!
South African hero Brad Binder also put in another stellar performance to bring his Red Bull KTM bike home in third place.
MotoGP British Grand Prix Results
| Position | Rider | Team |
|---|---|---|
| 1st | Aleix Espargaro | Aprilia Racing |
| 2nd | Francesco Bagnaia | Ducati Lenovo Racing |
| 3rd | Brad Binder | Red Bull KTM |
Bagnaia gunning for the title
If there’s one conclusion to draw from Silverstone, it’s that Francesco Bagnaia is riding like a true champion. He’s cool, calm, and collected on the bike. Even though Silverstone was one of the most mixed performances for Ducati and Bagnaia this season, he still finished in second place, building on his lead in the championship standings.
With each step he takes toward the title, the pressure cools even further on the Italian champion. It’s going to take a serious downturn in form for his rivals to catch up to him. However, with the unpredictable Austrian weather, we could see a mixed grid once again this weekend. Bagnaia had some mysterious issues in the wet at Silverstone — leaving him in 14th for the Sprint. Will he struggle if it rains at the Red Bull Ring this weekend?
Jorge Martin and Marco Bezzecchi will need to tilt their visors down and get on with it if they want to stay in the fight for this year’s title!
