2023 MotoGP TT Assen: What to Expect
Jorge Martin put in a truly stunning performance at the Sachenring last weekend. He won both the Sprint and the Grand Prix, starting from 6th place on the grid. The Sprint race was a thriller from start to finish and served up some exciting racing throughout the entire field.
The main race at the Sachenring was just as heart-pounding. Marc Marquez crashed during the early morning warm-up, so he was already out of contention. The Spaniard’s poor luck continues as he suffered a fractured finger and is unlikely to show at this weekend’s race.
We saw some close scraps in the Grand Prix, with riders making daring overtakes. But, it was the battle up front that drew all of the attention. World Champion Francesco Bagnaia was desperate to charge off to victory after starting in pole position. Jorge Martin, however, became a spoke in the wheel for the champ.
The pair battled away for several laps, even making contact coming out of the final corner to start to last lap. In the end, it was Martin who took an incredible photo finish victory — the closest in the 2023 MotoGP season (0.064 seconds gap).

The tide turns in the title fight
Before heading to Germany, it was all about Pecco Bagnaia and Marco Bezzecchi. However, Bezzecchi could only manage 7th in the Sprint and 4th in the Grand Prix. With Jorge Martin putting in some stellar performances, he’s overtaken Bezzecchi in the championship standings and is now hunting down Bagnaia for the lead.
Both of the Prima Pramac bikes have shown exceptional pace in recent races — Johann Zarco has closed the gap and is sneaking up to Brad Binder in the standings as well.
Martin is now just 16 points behind Bagnaia, and he’s closing in fast. Even though Pecco has had some good, consistent results, he’s starting to fall back. Bezzecchi is a further 18 points behind Martin, so he’ll be hoping for a much better weekend at the TT Assen.
One mistake from anyone in the top three of the championship standings and the game changes once again. It’s going to be an exciting battle all the way through the season!
TT Assen: Action from The Cathedral
As the riders head over to the Netherlands to tackle The Cathedral, they’ll be aiming for the top step of the podium in both the Sprint and the Grand Prix. Last year, Bagnaia took victory, with Bezzecchi in second place. Both of these riders have shown promise on this circuit in the past, so we could see them going head-to-head this weekend again. However, with Martin’s current run of form, it’s impossible to rule him out of the victory this weekend as well.
Furthermore, Binder might have been quiet at the Sachenring (with a crash in the Grand Prix), but he’s been incredibly consistent. The South African will be eager to bounce back at Assen!
Can Martin build on his victories and continue his streak? Will the World Champion bite back in Holland? Can anyone else steal a surprise victory? We’ll find out on Sunday!
