Researchers have uncovered a ChatGPT-powered tool used to con unsuspecting victims on dating sites. In a blog post on Wednesday, Oct. 4, Avast researchers said the tool, dubbed LoveGPT, can create deceptive dating profiles, simulate authentic conversations, discuss personal interests, empathize, and even fabricate fictional memories.
“It doesn’t just mimic human interaction; it crafts it, creating conversations so genuine that even the most discerning of us might be fooled,” Avast said.
While the tool has been around for over a decade, it was only integrated with ChatGPT in recent months, giving it “a voice that resonates with authenticity.”
‘The Charmer of the Digital Age’
From mainstream platforms like Tinder and OkCupid to niche sites such as Ashley Madison and Facebook Dating, LoveGPT has an uncanny ability to adapt and operate on different platforms.
Here is the full list of dating platforms that LoveGPT targets:
- Ashley Madison
- Badoo
- Bumble
- Craigslist
- DuyenSo
- Facebook Dating
- likeyou.vn
- MeetMe
- OkCupid
- Plenty of Fish (POF)
- Tagged
- Tinder
- Zoosk
“One moment it’s playing a poet on Bumble, and the next, it’s a travel enthusiast on Zoos,” Avast said.
While the adaptability of LoveGPT is remarkable, it is also its most deceptive feature. And with artificial intelligence (AI) behind its gears, predicting its next move is difficult.
In a technical paper, Avast’s threat intelligence team delved deeper, explaining the intricacies of LoveGPT’s operation. From its ability to camouflage on different dating platforms to the sophisticated techniques it uses to remain anonymous, the depth and breadth of its capabilities are daunting.
LoveGPT is designed with a level of intricacy that allows it to create detailed profiles across various platforms, Avast said. And it continues to receive updates that refine its capabilities.
To keep things running smoothly, LoveGPT works in tandem with a few other software tools. The program’s depth is evident in its many features, including a vast database that manages a wide range of information. It even mimics mobile devices to access mobile-only platforms.
Over time, LoveGPT has adapted to the changing landscape of online dating by supporting different platforms as they come and go. It’s not just about creating profiles; LoveGPT ensures these profiles pass all checks on dating sites.
While the AI component is still being developed, the emerging trend indicates a potential shift in cyber threats as bad actors leverage advanced AI to execute their devious plans. In February, researchers at McAfee said AI tools like ChatGPT are making scams like catfishing and phishing attacks easier for cybercriminals and more difficult to spot.
Several ChatGPT-powered tools have emerged in recent months, including WormGPT and DarkBERT.
Protecting Yourself in the Age of AI Deception
While the capabilities of LoveGPT are impressive, it underscores the need to tread cautiously in the world of online dating.
“So, while you might be chuckling at a witty exchange, remember to always be a little bit suspicious,” Avast said.
Avast also provided some guidelines to ensure safety:
- Trust, but verify: If something feels too perfect, dig deeper. A reverse image search can reveal if a profile picture is fake.
- Stay alert: Bots like LoveGPT feed on our desire to connect. It’s essential to be cautious of profiles that seem overly enthusiastic or request personal information prematurely.
- Safety first: Regardless of how authentic someone seems, always avoid sharing personal details like address, workplace, or financial information.
