2023 MotoGP San Marino GP: What to Expect
The Catalunya Grand Prix was intense. There are just two words to describe that race start — utter chaos.
It all started when Enea Bastianini crashed into Pramac’s Johann Zarco. The pair were then forced into a collision with fellow Ducati riders Fabio Di Giannantonio, Alex Marquez and championship contender Marco Bezzecchi.
Unfortunately, the mayhem didn’t end there. As the lead pack made their way through turn two, race leader Bagnaia’s bike started sliding underneath him. As the Italian corrected the slide, he suffered a massive highside and was flipped off his bike, directly into the path of the oncoming pack. Brad Binder was helpless as the Ducati rider fell directly in front of his bike, and the South African rode over his legs.
The race was red-flagged immediately, and Bagnaia was stretchered off to the medical center. After the Grand Prix, it was confirmed that there were no fractures, and miraculously, he didn’t suffer any severe injuries, only some bruising. It’s yet to be seen whether the championship leader will be declared fit to race this weekend, but he’s as determined as ever, so don’t be surprised if he turns up at Misano on Thursday morning!
Bastianini wasn’t so lucky, though. The medical report stated: “[Bastianini has] a fracture of the malleolus [on the left ankle] and a complex fracture of the second metacarpal of the left hand.” It’s been confirmed that he will be out for at least 3 weeks.
Aleix Espargaro went on to win the Grand Prix, with Maverick Viñales coming home in second for an Aprilia 1-2 finish. Jorge Martin grabbed a much-needed podium to boost his 2023 championship hopes.

It’s unclear as to whether Pecco will be back in the hot seat this weekend. But, whether he’s at Misano or not, his 2023 title hopes have taken a serious knock after the Catalunya Grand Prix.
Even if he does participate this weekend, it’s unlikely that he’ll be on the pace just a week after his massive crash. It could take some time before the Italian is back to normal again.
That opens the door for other riders to close the gap in the standings. Jorge Martin is the closest threat at the moment, with a 50-point deficit to the championship leader. A good performance this weekend could see him close that gap considerably.
Marco Bezzecchi and Brad Binder are also hanging in there as they try to reel the Italian. Meanwhile, Espargaro is also quietly creeping into the picture!
