The company known for its privacy-oriented search engine, DuckDuckGo, announced on Thursday that it has officially launched the public beta version of its new privacy-centric browser for Windows.
DuckDuckGo revealed in a blog post that the new browser comes with several features and tools, notably the ad-blocking Duck Player, advanced tracker blocking, a Fire Button to delete recent browsing, built-in email protection, and more.
DuckDuckGo’s Privacy-Centric Features
The DuckDuckGo browser comes equipped with several distinguishing features. Notable among these is the Duck Player, a built-in YouTube player that blocks privacy-invading ads and prevents video views from affecting user recommendations.
“Duck Player, our browser’s more-private way to watch YouTube: This built-in video player protects you from tracking cookies and personalized ads with a distraction-free interface that incorporates YouTube’s strictest privacy settings for embedded video,” the blog said.
The browser also offers advanced tracker blocking, smarter encryption, and cookie pop-up management for the most private browsing options.
“Our 3rd-party Tracker Loading Protection, for example, blocks the hidden trackers from companies like Google and Facebook lurking on other websites before they get a chance to load,” the blog post said.
The browser’s Fire Button claims to offer an additional level of privacy by letting users nuke their browsing and search histories.
“The Fire Button, which burns recent browsing data in one click. (There’s also a handy ‘Fireproof’ option for any sites you want to stay logged into),” DuckDuckGo added.
Email anonymity also comes with the new Windows browser, DuckDuck Go said. “Email Protection, which can hide your email address with [email protected] addresses when signing up for things online.”
Positive User Feedback and Future
The blog post showed that early user feedback on the DuckDuckGo Windows browser has been positive, with many users praising its fast performance, light resource usage, and its effective ad-blocking capabilities, particularly with YouTube videos.
Despite being a beta version, the DuckDuckGo Windows browser does not currently support browser extensions, although plans to add this functionality are underway.
DuckDuckGo said that other upcoming features include faster startup performance, the ability to pin tabs, HTML bookmark import, and enhanced privacy features like Fingerprinting Protection, Link Tracking Protection, and Referrer Tracking Protection. Also, private password and bookmark syncing across devices are coming soon, according to DuckDuckGo.
For those interested in keeping their online activities private, the DuckDuckGo Windows browser looks like a promising new tool. It aligns with the increasing global demand for privacy-focused cybersecurity and data privacy tools, like the recently enhanced Proton VPN that now features a privacy panel to display NetShield’s efficacy.
