2022 Italian Grand Prix: What to Expect
Last weekend’s Dutch Grand Prix was yet another thriller! Max Verstappen schooled the entire grid yet again with a masterful drive. For a moment, Mercedes had the upper hand over both Red Bull and Ferrari, but a safety car threw a spanner in the works, allowing Verstappen to switch over to the faster soft compound tires and overtake Lewis Hamilton for the lead.
The Orange Army was out in full force to celebrate Verstappen’s victory as George Russell claimed second place, and the Ferrari of Charles Leclerc took the third and final podium spot. Verstappen is now well out of reach in the championship standings with a lead of 109 points. He could go on holiday for the next four races and still be leading the championship when he comes back.
Tifosi and a Sea of Red
Monza is one of the most loved circuits on the calendar. Home to the red Ferrari team and their passionate fans named the Tifosi, we’re expecting to see the Italian fans out in full force all throughout the weekend. Ferrari is celebrating 75 years in Formula 1 and has dedicated a special livery for this weekend’s race with splashes of yellow and yellow race suits for their drivers.
However, the Tifosi may not leave all too happy this weekend because, on paper, Monza is Red Bull‘s strongest circuit. The Austrian team has built a rocket ship of a car this year, and with the Temple of Speed being the fastest track on the calendar, we’re expecting them to streak ahead of the competition once again.
Max Verstappen heads into the weekend with the third biggest lead after 15 races in Formula 1 history. Hamilton has the record with 131 points in 2020, followed by Sebastian Vettel who had a lead of 118 points in 2011. Verstappen sits in third with a 109-point lead after 15 races of the season.
