What to Expect at the 2023 Miami Grand Prix
Red Bull continued its dominant run in Baku, taking the 25th 1-2 finish in the team’s history. Sergio Perez took victory in both the GP and Sprint, while teammate and current championship leader, Max Verstappen, followed up second in the GP and third in the Sprint. Charles Leclerc nabbed the third spot on the podium for the big race, and second in the Sprint — showing some signs of a Ferrari resurgence.
We’re heading to the neon-soaked streets of Miami, and it’s a circuit that’s got a similar technical approach to Jeddah. While Red Bull is the likely favorite, they might have more of a fight on their hands this weekend.
Ferrari resurgence
Despite their poor start to the season, Ferrari showed some strong pace in Baku. Against all odds, the scarlet red car of Charles Leclerc was the one to beat during qualifying. The Monégasque took pole position in both qualifying and the Sprint Shootout despite the dominance of Red Bull, meaning there could be a real battle brewing on the horizon.
Even with the strong pace over the course of one lap, the Ferrari just couldn’t keep up with the straight-line speed and consistency of the Red Bulls. It’s evident that Ferrari is chewing into its tires too much and can’t keep up over the race distance. Carlos Sainz couldn’t match his teammate’s pace, only securing fifth place in the Grand Prix after a hard-fought battle between the Aston Martins and Mercedes.
But there is still some good news for the Tifosi. When Formula 1 heads to Italy for the race in Imola, Ferrari has a massive upgrade package ready and waiting — according to sources from Maranello at least.
Will Miami bring exciting battles?
Aston Martin and Mercedes are still in contention, though they’re slightly behind the Red Stallion. Aston Martin brought an upgraded rear wing to Azerbaijan, but it ended up causing them a bit of trouble. Both cars suffered mechanical failures with their DRS throughout the weekend, and were significantly slower on the straights. Still, Fernando Alonso managed to salvage 4th place, while Lance Stroll finished in 7th. Not too bad for a damage-control race. Expect Aston Martin to be back in the fight this weekend.
Mercedes also had a tough weekend, but their drivers managed to score some decent points on the street circuit. Lewis Hamilton finished in 6th place while George Russell could only manage 8th, but he did set the fastest lap. We’ll have to see if the two British-based teams can cause Red Bull some trouble this weekend.
The first of six Sprint races completed
Baku was the scene for the first Sprint race of the season. This year we have six venues for Sprint races, which is double what we had last season. Fans and drivers alike have been critical. Even with the new format, both Max Verstappen and Lewis Hamilton have offered up sharp criticism of the Sprints and called for F1 to go back to standard race weekends.
