Proton has launched a high-security program called Proton Sentinel, offering advanced protection by combining artificial intelligence (AI) with human expertise.

In a blog post on Wednesday, Proton said the Sentinel program was inspired by its years of experience protecting high-profile individuals, who are more at risk of attacks from state-backed hackers and cybercriminals.

“We are now ready to provide the same level of advanced protection and support that we reserved for these VIPs to any Proton user that wants it through the Proton Sentinel program,” the company said.

According to Proton, the Sentinel program “surpasses everything that has come before due to the human element.” Users who sign up for the program will benefit from 24/7 account monitoring by AI-powered software and human analysts.

Proton Sentinel’s Advanced Protection

The Proton Sentinel program is designed to provide advanced protection to users’ accounts. Suspicious login attempts will be rigorously scrutinized and challenged. And support requests related to account security will be automatically escalated to trained security specialists, further safeguarding user data and privacy.

“Accounts enrolled in the Proton Sentinel program are not just monitored 24/7 by software but also by teams of security analysts who are experts at detecting infiltration and account takeover attempts,” Proton explained.

According to Proton, by adding the human element, the program goes beyond just strengthening default protections.

The Sentinel program may not be for everyone, though. Due to strict account monitoring, users will receive more security alerts. It may not be suitable for users who share an account with others who haven’t enabled two-factor authentication, Proton said, as they’re more likely to be challenged when trying to log in.

How to Use Proton Sentinel

Proton Sentinal is only available to users with Proton Unlimited, Family, Business, Lifetime, and Visionary accounts.

Follow the steps below to activate Proton Sentinel:

  1. Go to Proton’s website and get a subscription.
  2. Log into your account through the account.proton.me page.
  3. Navigate to Settings → Account → Security and Privacy to activate Proton Sentinel.
  4. Upon activation, users will get more account security alerts and logs detailing security events, such as logins and account modifications.

“Important events in security logs, such as logins and account changes, will have a new column called Protection, showing any defensive actions our systems took. There will also be other useful information, such as the operating system and device that triggered the event,” Proton explained.
