Manchester United vs. Manchester City: What to Expect
The Theatre of Dreams will host the reigning champions Manchester City on Saturday afternoon. These two titans have already faced each other once in the 2022/2023 season at the Etihad Stadium. Manchester City beat the Red Devils 6-3 in their last encounter in October 2022, with Erling Haaland and youngster Phil Foden managing to slot in a pair of hat tricks on the day.
But Manchester United has been on a roll. The Red Devils are currently sitting on six wins in a row in all competitions, and Erik Ten Hag has got the midfield and attack clicking perfectly. The defensive side of the team is still shaky at times, but Raphael Varane, Luke Shaw, and Lisandro Martinez have been the standout defensive players so far this season. There is no doubt that Ten Hag will be starting with all three of these players against Manchester City this weekend to try and stop Haaland.
Casemiro has been playing brilliantly in the midfield too, so his starting place is sealed for the Machester Derby. As for the attack, it’s almost certain that Antony will be starting. The Brazilian has scored in five of his ten matches for Manchester United so far. Marcus Rashford will be the focal point for the Red Devils on Saturday, though. The speedster is in the best form of his life and has scored 15 goals in 25 matches in all competitions so far this season, with an incredible six of those goals coming in 2023.
Manchester City, on the other hand, has been in relatively shaky form recently — which is why the Red Devils stand a good chance of winning in the reverse fixture this weekend! Manchester City has lost to Everton and Brentford in recent Premier League matches, but they’ve also toppled Chelsea and Liverpool.
The Manchester City defense has been struggling to find form recently. Although they’re not letting in tons of goals, they’re certainly underperforming by their standards. On the attacking side, Erling Haaland is breaking Premier League records. Although he’s had a relatively slow start to 2023, he is the fastest player to reach 20 goals in Premier League history. The marksman has an incredible 21 goals in just 16 games for Manchester City, more than we have ever seen before at this stage of the season from a single player. In addition, no player scored hat tricks in three consecutive matches until Haaland arrived in the Premier League.
Can the Manchester United defense keep Haaland quiet on Saturday? Or will Manchester City take another victory over the Red Devils? All we can do is wait and see as one of the key matches of the year goes down!
