The “Race to the Sun” is back. The 746-mile (1,201 km) Paris-Nice 2023 cycling classic starts Sunday, March 5, in the Paris suburb of La Verrière and wraps up Sunday, March 12, in Nice.
Last year’s champion, Primož Roglič, won the race in thrilling fashion, taking first place by just 29 seconds and surviving a last-ditch comeback from Simon Yates. But, due to injury, he isn’t in the Paris-Nice 2023 lineup.
Teammate and Tour de France winner Jonas Vingegaard will try to push team Jumbo-Visma through the finish line. He’s already weathered stiff competition from rival Tadej Pogačar of UAE Team Emirates in the early stages.
The second stage was carved out for pure sprinters, but a crash during the lead-out trains broke up hopes. Rather, we saw Mads Pedersen of Trek-Segafredo take the top spot and leader’s jersey.
Jumbo Visma managed to lock up the third-stage team time trial by sticking with old-school teamwork, keeping four riders until the line to set the fastest time of 33 minutes and 55 seconds. Under the new format, most other teams opted to drop riders and leave their strongest to take the last kilometer.
