OpenAI on Monday revealed that its viral chatbot ChatGPT will be getting voice and image capabilities, essentially giving it the ability to “see, hear, and speak.”
According to OpenAI, this opens up more ways of using the chatbot. “They offer a new, more intuitive type of interface by allowing you to have a voice conversation or show ChatGPT what you’re talking about,” the company said in a blog post.
These advancements pave the way for a more interactive experience, enabling the chatbot to “solve new tasks.” But it also raises concerns about data privacy and potential misuse.
OpenAI will roll out these new features to ChatGPT Plus and Enterprise over the next two weeks.
Privacy Concerns, Potential for Misuse
ChatGPT’s voice and visual capabilities add new layers of complexity to the privacy debate. The chatbot’s image interpretation capability raises questions about context interpretation and potential misjudgments.
There’s also the possibility that ChatGPT could collect sensitive data from photographs and voice commands that users share. When the official ChatGPT iOS app was launched in May, the company revealed that AI trainers may review users’ chats. The same is presumably true for images, and, as the adage goes, “a picture is worth a thousand words.”
ChatGPT’s ability to generate “human-like audio” could also be used for AI voice scams. Cybersecurity experts have already warned about the rise of such AI-driven scams.
These concerns could become heightened as individuals and organizations explore different ways to integrate ChatGPT into their work. Companies like Duolingo are already leveraging the chatbot to enhance conversational depth, and Iceland is exploring its potential for language preservation.
Using ChatGPT Safely
While ChatGPT’s new capabilities have several benefits, it is important to avoid sharing sensitive or personal details with the chatbot. This includes potentially revealing images and text. We also recommend reviewing the app’s permissions and limiting the data ChatGPT can access on your device.
Staying up-to-date with company announcements and policy shifts offers users an extra layer of awareness, providing valuable insights into how their data is utilized. Read our guide to the privacy risks of AI for more tips on how to use ChatGPT safely.
OpenAI has technical measures to “significantly limit ChatGPT’s ability to analyze and make direct statements about people.” However, the onus lies on users to engage with these features responsibly.
