Netflix App IconNetflix is one of the most popular streaming service worldwide. Although you get a large offer of movies and series, some people still think it is too expensive. Which is no wonder because even with the basic plan a subscription will set you back 96 dollars a year. You can try out their service with their offer of a free month, but most of us are hooked after that. However, what some people don’t know is that the price for a Netflix subscription can differ greatly between countries.

We did some research and found out the reason behind these differences. Below you can read about it and find out where they charge what. Moreover, you can see how you can use this fact to your advantage.

No Time to Read the Whole Article? Here is a Short Summary:

  • The Netflix content offer is different in every country because of broadcasting rights.
  • The difference in price between country cannot be explained by the amount of content, more likely it depends on the economic power of a country.
  • In Switzerland a Netflix basic plan is most expensive and costs $12.40 a month
  • In Turkey a basic Netflix account is cheapest and only costs $2.55 a month. This can be explained by the rapid collapse of the Turkish Lira.
  • Someone in The United States can save around $90 a year by getting a Turkish Netflix premium-account with a VPN.
  • With a VPN you can change your virtual locations and profit from the price differences between different countries.
  • Some trustworthy VPN services are CyberGhost, ExpressVPN and NordVPN. Watch out you do not use VPNs like Hola, as they can open your computer up for others.
  • If you get a Netflix account in another country you will be able to watch it in your home country at a lower cost.

Netflix in Another Country: Different Movies, Different Prices

Like all other TV channels or streaming services, Netflix has to negotiate about the broadcasting rights of movies and series. If the rights for a certain movie are with another company, Netflix cannot show this movie. For this reason it can happen that Netflix is able to buy the rights to a certain movie in the U.S. but not in Britain. Because of this the Netflix content is different in every county.

However, we found that this is not the reason for the differences in price. For instance, the offer of Netflix US is three times as big as the offer on Netflix in the Netherlands. But you pay more for a subscription in the Netherlands.

It is more likely that Netflix bases their prices on the economic power of a country. If people from a certain country have relatively more to spend than people in other countries, they will be prepared to pay more for their subscription. For this reason a Netflix account in Switzerland ($12.40) or Sweden ($10.12) is way more expensive than an account in Brazil ($4.91) or Argentina ($3.47). An extraordinary example of this is the price of a Netflix subscription in Turkey. Since the Turkish Lira has decreased in value over the last couple of months, a subscription only costs $2.55 a month.

Most of you will be happy to know that there is a way to profit from these extreme differences. We will explain how this works.

How You can get a Netflix Account in Another Country

The nice thing about Netflix is that you can get an account without having to fill in your address. All you need is an email account, a password, and a way to pay. Because of this it is also possible to get a Netflix account in a different country than you are planning on using it in.

However, you probably don’t want to spend your money on a plane ticket to Turkey. Luckily, there is a way to enjoy the Netflix pricing of another country, without having to travel anywhere.

Change Your Virtual Location With a VPN

You can change your virtual location with a VPN. While this may sound difficult it really is very simple. You install the VPN software on your pc, smartphone, or tablet and connect to the internet through a secure server. This VPN protects your data and allows you to go online as though you are in a different country. Most VPN providers have servers all over the world. All you have to do is pick a server in a county of your choice and connect to it. To websites and other services it will look like you are in a different country. For this reason, a website like Netflix will show you the prices of the country you are pretending to be in.

To make sure it works and your data is protected, we advise you use a premium VPN service like CyberGhost, ExpressVPN, or NordVPN. They are solid and fast services with servers all over the world. The nice thing is that they also offer a 30-day money-back guarantee. This means you can use their service to get a Netflix subscription. Then, if you don’t like the VPN you can get your money back, no questions asked.

Step-by-step: Pay Less for Netflix!

To enjoy a cheaper Netflix subscription, follow these steps:

  • Get a subscription with CyberGhost. CyberGhost is relatively cheap and if you’re unhappy you can easily get your money back.
  • Turn on the VPN and select a CyberGhost server in Turkey
  • Go to
  • You will now see the Turkish Netflix website with Turkish prices
  • Get a Netflix subscription and continue to enjoy lower subscription fees from then on

Now you don’t need your VPN account anymore, you can enjoy the discount forever. However, if you decide to keep your CyberGhost subscription, you can always stay safe and anonymous online. Moreover, below you can read how a VPN can help you watch the Neflix content in another county.

Warning: During our research we also used the VPN Hola. Still we would advise against using Hola. If you use the free version of Hola your IP address is used for their paying customers. This means that others can use your IP for illegal activities and you will get the blame. In the past this has caused some Hola users to get in trouble with the law.

A Subscription from a Different Country Will Work for You

If you have gotten your subscription through a VPN in a different country you can use it as you normally would. For example, if you get a Turkish subscription while you are actually in the U.S. you don’t have to connect to Turkish servers all the time. You can simply watch the American Netflix content for a lower price. Below you can see how much you can save on a subscription if you are in the U.S. but get a Netflix account through a Turkish server.

Country (timespan) Basic (USD) Standard (USD) Premium (USD)
The U.S. (month) 7.99 10.99 13.99
Turkey (month) 2.55 4.47 6.38

Saving (year) 65.28 (68.1%) 78.24 (59.3%) 91.32 (54.4%)
