What is a dedicated IP address?

Some VPN providers offer the option to request a dedicated IP address. This means you get a unique, static IP address assigned only to your account, rather than sharing one with other VPN users. Your real IP address remains hidden, while websites see the dedicated VPN IP instead.

A dedicated IP can offer several advantages compared to shared VPN IPs:

  • More reliable access to streaming services. Since fewer users share the IP, it’s less likely to be flagged or blocked.
  • Fewer additional verification checks. Services may be less likely to trigger suspicious‑login warnings.
  • Lower risk of IP blacklisting. Shared VPN IPs can be flagged if many users abuse them, while a dedicated IP reduces this risk.
  • Fewer CAPTCHAs. Websites may challenge shared VPN IPs more often because of high traffic from multiple users.
  • Safe remote network access. A static IP can make it easier to configure secure access to company networks or private servers.

NordVPN is the best VPN with a dedicated IP address. It also offers reliable dedicated IP addresses in multiple locations, along with strong encryption, a strict no-logs policy, and fast speeds for secure browsing, remote work, and accessing services that require a consistent IP address.

A dedicated IP address is a static IP assigned exclusively to you, rather than shared with other VPN users. It still hides your real IP address, but because it’s unique, it offers several practical benefits. For example, it can provide more consistent access to websites and streaming services, reduce the number of security checks or verification prompts when logging into accounts from abroad, and lower the chances of encountering CAPTCHAs or blocked IPs.

In this guide, I’ll explain how dedicated IPs differ from regular shared VPN IPs, their main advantages and disadvantages, and when it makes sense to use one.

What is a dedicated IP address?

A dedicated IP is a static IP address assigned exclusively to a single account. Unlike a standard VPN connection, where you share an IP with hundreds of others. In addition, it belongs only to you and remains the same every time you connect.

With a normal VPN server, your IP is dynamic, which means you might get a different address every time you log in, even if you choose the same location. A dedicated IP provides a consistent digital identity, making it appear as if you connect from the same fixed location every time.

While a dedicated IP still masks your real, ISP-provided IP address, it offers slightly less anonymity than a shared VPN IP. Because you are the only one using it, your web traffic is easier to trace back to a single user profile over long periods.

Dedicated IP vs shared IP

By connecting to a dedicated, unique IP address, you’ll always have the same exact IP address wherever you are. You can always connect to that one IP address on that specific VPN server. Moreover, you’ll be the only one who’s connected to and will display that particular IP.

When it comes to a shared IP, the default feature for VPNs, as the name suggests, you share an IP with others. Both your data and the traffic of dozens of other people worldwide will be sent through the same server that the shared IP address corresponds to.

Moreover, you’ll often be assigned a different IP address each time you connect to VPN servers that only have shared addresses. VPN providers move users among shared IP addresses to increase anonymity and manage server load.

The pros and cons of dedicated IP addresses

Dedicated IPs are great for many purposes, which we will discuss in a bit. However, like anything in life, they have their pros and cons.

There are many situations in which dedicated IP addresses can be useful. However, dedicated IP addresses have advantages and disadvantages.

Dedicated IP pros

  • More reliable access to streaming services such as Netflix, since the IP isn’t shared with many other VPN users.
  • Fewer security checks when logging into Gmail or PayPal from different locations.
  • Lower risk of IP blacklisting, because the address isn’t affected by other users' activity.
  • Fewer CAPTCHAs and anti‑bot checks, which often target heavily used and shared VPN IPs.
  • Secure remote work and network access, as a static IP can be allowed-listed on company servers or private networks.

Dedicated IP cons

  • Additional costs, since most VPN providers charge extra for dedicated IP add-ons.
  • Reduced anonymity compared to shared IPs, because the IP address is associated only with your account rather than many users.

The advantages of a dedicated IP address

Even with a good VPN, you might still be unable to access streaming platforms based in a country other than your own. That’s because many streaming services block shared VPN IPs when many users on these shared servers try to access them.

With a dedicated IP, you won’t face the issue described above, as you’re the only one using that IP. Therefore, Netflix, Hulu, Max, or any other streaming service you use won’t block your IP address.

Similarly, you won’t need to go through any extra verification when logging into your accounts, like your bank or email account, from another country, as you can control where your login request seems to come from.

Websites are also much less likely to mistake you for a bot or another suspicious online entity because you’re the only one using that IP. This means you’re less likely to end up on a blacklist and less likely to face constant Google CAPTCHAs.

Last but not least, a dedicated IP is a great tool to access company networks safely and, as such, greatly facilitates remote working. Do note that you generally need a reliable business VPN to enjoy this advantage, such as Proton for Business. That’s because this requires configuring a dedicated IP and a network access point that match.

The disadvantages of a dedicated IP address

If you’re looking for a VPN with a static IP, you’ll likely have to pay an additional charge on top of the regular subscription fee. That’s because dedicated IPs are an extra service that not all users need and require additional resources on the provider’s end.

Fortunately, some VPN providers keep the extra cost to a minimum. For instance, our number 1 dedicated IP VPN and static IP VPN, NordVPN, offers dedicated IPs from only $4.19 a month.

Another important downside is that you’ll be sacrificing some of the privacy that a VPN provides. If you use a dedicated IP, websites can still create a profile of you based on your online preferences. This way, they can show you personalized ads.

Moreover, there’s an increased chance that someone links your online actions to your person. This means you are significantly less anonymous.

When should you use a dedicated IP address?

A dedicated IP address can make your VPN connection more stable and consistent. Because the IP address is assigned only to you, it reduces many of the issues that sometimes occur with shared VPN IPs, such as repeated verification checks or blocked access to certain services. Dedicated IPs are particularly useful for the following types of VPN users:

  • Frequent streamers. A dedicated IP can provide more reliable access to streaming platforms like Netflix. This is because the IP address isn’t shared with many other VPN users, reducing the chances of flagging or blocking.
  • Frequent travelers. If you often log into services like Gmail, online banking portals, or payment platforms such as PayPal while abroad, a dedicated IP can reduce suspicious-login alerts and extra verification steps.
  • Businesses and remote workers. Companies can use dedicated IPs to allow secure remote access to internal systems or company networks by allowing-listing a single trusted IP address.

NordVPN protects user data with AES‑256 encryption, a strict no‑logs policy, and additional privacy tools, including Double VPN, Threat Protection, which blocks ads, trackers, and malicious sites, and Onion Over VPN for enhanced anonymity.

NordVPN dedicated IPs are available for $4.19 per month as an add‑on. This comes on top of NordVPN’s subscriptions, which currently start at around $ 3.49 per month. The service also includes a 30‑day money‑back guarantee, allowing users to try it risk‑free.

Moreover, Surfshark stands out for its strong performance. The VPN delivers fast speeds using the WireGuard protocol, making it well-suited to streaming and everyday browsing. It also protects user data with AES‑256 encryption, a strict no‑logs policy, and additional privacy tools such as CleanWeb to block ads and trackers, MultiHop, and Camouflage Mode, which disguises VPN traffic.

Proton VPN offers dedicated IP addresses designed for businesses. This makes it a strong option for companies that need secure and reliable remote access to internal networks and services.

In addition to dedicated IPs, Proton protects employee connections with AES‑256 encryption and a strict no‑logs policy, protecting sensitive company data. Businesses can also benefit from Proton’s secure ecosystem, which includes encrypted email via Proton Mail, secure cloud storage via Proton Drive, and a business calendar, creating a private, integrated workspace for teams.

While Proton’s business plans are not the cheapest, they offer strong value to organizations that prioritize security and privacy. Each employee gets 10 VPN connections and 500 GB of secure cloud storage, making it a comprehensive solution for secure remote work and collaboration.

How I chose the best VPN with a dedicated IP address

This list of top dedicated IP VPNs is based on extensive testing and experience with 22 VPN providers. Each VPN was evaluated using key criteria to ensure reliable performance, security, and value. The factors considered include:

  • Dedicated IP availability and locations. More locations give greater flexibility for streaming, remote work, or region-specific access.
  • Pricing. Both the cost of the dedicated IP add-on and the base VPN subscription were included.
  • Connection speeds. Fast and stable connections are essential, particularly for HD and 4K streaming.
  • Server network size. A large, well-distributed server network improves the unblocking of geo-restricted content.
  • Security and privacy features. Strong encryption, a no-logs policy, and additional privacy tools were required.

Conclusion: What is a dedicated IP address for a VPN

A dedicated IP address allows a VPN user to connect through a unique, static IP that isn’t shared with other users. Unlike regular VPN servers that assign shared IP addresses, a dedicated IP stays the same each time you connect. This can help reduce login verification checks, lower the chances of encountering CAPTCHAs or blacklisted IPs, and provide more stable access to services while traveling or working remotely.

However, a dedicated IP generally offers less anonymity than shared VPN IPs, since the address is linked to a single account rather than many users. For this reason, shared VPN servers may still be the better option for users whose main goal is maximum anonymity.

For users who want a reliable dedicated IP VPN, NordVPN is the best option. The provider offers affordable subscriptions and dedicated IP add-ons, along with fast speeds, strong security features, and dedicated IP locations across multiple countries worldwide.

FAQ

Frequently Asked Questions
What is a dedicated IP?

A dedicated IP address is a unique, static VPN IP address that only you use exclusively. This can benefit users by making it easier to unblock streaming platforms, skipping extra verification steps CAPTCHA barrages and safely accessing remote networks.

What are the advantages of a dedicated IP?

The main advantages of a dedicated IP are more consistent access to online services, fewer verification checks, and a lower risk of IP blacklisting. Because the IP address is used only by one person, it can provide more reliable access to streaming platforms such as Netflix, Hulu, and Max. A dedicated IP can also reduce identity verification requests when logging into accounts while traveling, since websites won’t detect frequent IP changes. In addition, email providers and other services are less likely to blacklist the IP because it isn’t shared with many other users.

What are the disadvantages of a dedicated IP?

The main disadvantages of a dedicated IP are the additional cost and reduced anonymity compared to shared VPN IPs. Most VPN providers charge an extra fee for the dedicated IP add‑on, which increases the total subscription price. In addition, a dedicated IP is used only by one account, so online activity is tied to a single IP address rather than being mixed with other users. This can make it easier for websites and services to recognize repeated activity at the same address. If these drawbacks are a concern, using a regular VPN server with a shared IP may be a better option.

What is the best VPN service with a dedicated IP option?

Currently, NordVPN is the best VPN that offers dedicated IP addresses, thanks to its incredible balance of affordability, dedicated IP locations, streaming speeds, and outstanding security.

When you choose the option for a dedicated IP address, is it possible to change the location of the IP address manually, when needed? When choosing the dedicated IP, you're asked to select a county. It's just that I'd like to access different streaming sites in Australia, the UK and the US. If I select the US, for example, am I restricted to only being able to access streaming sites within the US? (thank you)

    • David Janssen

Yes. A dedicated IP address is a fixed IP address. This means you select one country and you'll get an IP address in that country. If you want to have fixed IP addresses in multiple countries, you'll have to get multiple dedicated IP addresses.

      • Alyssa

Hey David, thanks so much for clarifying that ... much appreciated :)

      • Steve

Confused about your answer. If I have i static IP in Indiana all my comms will go thru that Indiana IP. If I want to use a VPN to pretend I live in the UK, I connect to the UK server and it gives me a shared UK IP to use, that shared IP routes back thru my static IP in Indiana. Similarly with any other country. I think Alyssa wants to visit streaming sites in different countries from her static IP, so she doesn't really need static IPs for each country, the shared IP provided by the server in the country should suffice. Am I wrong?

        • Priscilla Sherman

          Hi Steve!
The VPN will hide your original static IP, so if you use a VPN server in the UK while you're in Indiana, UK websites will only see that UK IP address, instead of your own Indiana IP. To visit region-blocking streaming sites in different countries, you'd therefore need either a VPN with great unblocking capabilities that also work with shared IPs (like NordVPN or Surfshark) or a dedicated IP address in each country you'd want to stream from. The latter is especially useful with streaming services that work with (strong) VPN blocks, as those VPN blocks tend to block shared IPs, but not dedicated ones.

Thanks for sharing a useful blog about dedicated servers. For SEO purposes, which is better: dedicated or shared hosting?

    • David Janssen

Many people think it's better to use a dedicated IP for hosting, as that will increase your site's speed and therefore positively impact SEO. However, the difference isn't as big as you might think. If you use a good host, it'll be so minimal that it doesn't really matter anymore. In this case, a shared IP will do just as much in terms in SEO.

  3. Amir

Does static IP make the connection faster too? I just started using SurfShark and noticed they have some servers with static IP.
Thank you for your awesome. I discovered your Dutch website (https://www.vpngids.nl/) yesterday, and just today discovered this is your English website.

    • David Janssen - VPNOverview.com

When you use a static IP, this means the VPN's IP that you're using doesn't change. However, Surfshark's static IPs are still shared with others. The speed of the server depends, among other things, on the number of people using the same server. Therefore, using a static IP doesn't necessarily increase your connection's speed. A dedicated IP could possibly do this, as you'd be the only one using that server, but Surfshark doesn't currently offer those. If you want to read more about Surfshark's servers and their other options, you can always check out our review of this provider.
Thank you for the compliment! We aim to keep both our Dutch and our English website as up to date as possible.
