What is TotalVPN?
TotalVPN is a VPN service provider that can be purchased as a standalone product or together with the TotalAV suite. In any case, the product is owned by Total Security Limited, a company based in the UK. TotalVPN encrypts internet traffic by routing your connection through secure servers and masking your IP address. It helps to retain your online privacy, access geo-restricted content, and enhance security while using a public Wi-Fi.
| TotalVPN rating: | 7.0⭐️⭐️⭐️ |
| Price: | TotalVPN plans start at $ 1.59/month (first year), with annual renewal at $99/year ($8.25/month) |
| Free trial: | ❌ No |
| Servers: | Servers in over 90+ countries |
| Good for streaming? | ✅ Yes, consistently unblocks Netflix, Hulu, Disney+, and more |
| Good for torrenting? | ✅ Yes, allows P2P traffic on some servers |
| Good for gaming? | ✅ Yes, maintains good speeds on close servers |
| Current deal: | Get TotalVPN for as low as $ 1.59 /month |
TotalVPN is a budget-friendly option for less tech-savvy people. However, there are different opinions circulating around the internet regarding this VPN provider. Some are satisfied with the purchase, while others are calling it a scam for subscription renewal prices and hard cancellation processes. For this reason, I tested TotalVPN myself, taking into account all metrics, analyzing the service, and concluding whether it is worth the money in 2025 based on other VPNs.
TotalVPN price overview
TotalVPN has only one plan, which costs $ 1.59/month or $19/year for the first year. Then the renewal price spikes up to $99/year. For some users, this difference in the price can be too drastic, but you can always cancel the subscription before the renewal. In addition, the subscription includes TotalAV antivirus and Total AdBlock. On the other hand, you can get TotalVPN with TotalAV antivirus subscriptions. However, only TotalAV Internet Security and TotalAV Total Security offer a VPN.
- TotalAV Internet Security: $39 for the first year (6 devices), renewing at $129/year
- TotalAV Total Security: $49 for the first year (8 devices), renewing at $149/year
For more information about TotalAV plans, read our TotalAV review.
Overall, purchasing only a TotalVPN subscription is much cheaper than getting the full TotalAV suite. For this review, I got a TotalVPN plan, and I will cover the attributes of this subscription.
Does TotalVPN have a free trial?
Unfortunately, TotalVPN doesn’t offer a completely free trial. However, users can take a risk-free trial, otherwise known as a 30-day money-back guarantee for annual subscription. While you have to initially pay for the subscription, if you ask for a refund before 30 days end, you will get all your money back. Here’s a quick guide on how to take advantage of this perk.
- Select TotalVPN subscription and complete the purchase.
- Download and install TotalVPN on your device.
- Use TotalVPN for up to 30 days.
- Before the 30-day period ends, contact customer support and request a refund.
- Cancel your subscription and get your money back.
However, keep in mind that you can use the TotalVPN 30-day money-back guarantee with your account only once. If you resubscribe, you will be charged the full price and won’t be eligible for the money-back guarantee. The workaround is to create a new account with different contact information to appear as a new customer.
Does TotalVPN work with Netflix and other streaming sites?
I tested TotalVPN on various streaming platforms to determine whether it is a good fit to bypass geographical restrictions and stream without any issues. I can confirm that TotalVPN works well with different Netflix libraries, Disney+, Hulu, Max, and others. It only struggled with Amazon Prime Video as I didn’t manage to unblock this streaming service.

As I previously stated, TotalVPN and Netflix make a great pair. I successfully unblocked Netflix libraries in various locations. In the meantime, the streaming quality was good, I experienced zero buffering and lag on close servers. However, on distant servers, some occasional lag can occur due to slower speeds. Nevertheless, TotalVPN performed better than I expected.
| Netflix region | Works with TotalVPN? |
|---|---|
| The US | ✅ Yes |
| The UK | ✅ Yes |
| India | ❌ No |
| Japan | ✅ Yes |
| Philippines | ✅ Yes |
| Thailand | ✅ Yes |
| Vietnam | ❌ No |
Speaking of other streaming platforms, TotalVPN managed to grant reliable access to most of them. It worked well with location-based streaming services, such as BBC iPlayer and Channel 4. While TotalVPN struggled with Amazon Prime’s detection system, it successfully circumvented it on Peacock and YouTube TV. Similar to Netflix, I maintained stable HD streaming quality while some hiccups happened on distant servers. However, the overall streaming experience with TotalVPN was satisfactory, and I recommend it if you need a VPN to unblock geo-restricted platforms.
Is TotalVPN good for torrenting?
TotalVPN is a good option for torrenting. It has all the necessary security features for torrenting while maintaining steady downloading speeds. It even allows P2P traffic on some of its servers. Unfortunately, it lacks advanced tools, such as port forwarding or a SOCKS5 proxy, that are usually used to optimize torrenting speed and security.
During my tests, TotalVPN successfully masked my IP address, and DNS tests showed no leaks, confirming it is a safe VPN for torrenting. Download speeds were average; I had better results with other VPN service providers. However, if you are patient enough, they are stable enough for torrenting.

Overall, TotalVPN works for casual torrenting if you don’t mind the wait. However, if you want enhanced privacy and speeds, it is better to look for a more torrenting-friendly VPN service provider.
Is TotalVPN good for gaming?
TotalVPN is an average gaming option. It offers basic features required for safe gaming, such as military-grade encryption and multiple global servers. With these, you can access bot lobbies and avoid SBMM (skill-based matchmaking). In addition, it masks your IP address, can protect against basic tracking, and helps bypass regional restrictions in games.
When I tested TotalVPN for gaming, I noticed some limitations that can affect your gaming experience. For starters, TotalVPN showed average latency (ping) and speeds. For me, the ping was so high and the speeds so low that it was hard to play the game. However, keep in mind that speeds also depend on your device, internet connection, network conditions, and other factors. So, while the speeds can be better for you, the overall conclusion I gathered from my tests and others is that TotalVPN is not so good for fast-paced multiplayer games where low ping is crucial.

Moreover, while TotalVPN may help reduce DDoS attacks by masking your real IP address, it doesn’t offer specific servers with DDoS protection. However, they are essential for streamers and competitive players.
TotalVPN speed test results
Compared to other popular VPN service providers that have exceptional speeds, e.g., NordVPN, TotalVPN is somewhat moderate to fast on nearby servers, but can become slow on more distant connections. During my tests, it maintained around 80%-90% of the original download speed on servers close to my physical location. I used WireGuard tunneling protocol, which helped a lot to maintain a stable connection. However, when connected to more distant servers, the speed dropped significantly. I noticed around 40%-70% speed loss on average. This can impact highly sensitive activities, such as streaming, torrenting, and gaming.

I also noticed the speed varying depending on my activities. For example, while streaming on nearby server, the speed remained relatively constant and fast. On the other hand, I got one of the slowest speeds while gaming. However, keep in mind that speed performance can depend not only on VPN, but on your internet connection and device as well.
To achieve the best speed and performance, I recommend opting for the fastest protocols, such as WireGuard and Hydra. In addition, if server location is not important, connect to the one closest to you. Also, many VPNs, including TotalVPN, has “Quick connect” or “Fastest server” option. It automatically connects you to the sever deemed best at the moment based on latency and load.
TotalVPN server locations
When choosing a VPN service provider, one of the key requirements is a wide server network. It is necessary for avoiding blacklisted servers, overcrowding, bypassing blackouts, accessing a wider range of streaming platforms, and even getting cheaper flights.
TotalVPN has a relatively small server network. According to recent information, TotalVPN has around 50 or 60 servers across 30 countries worldwide. But this information is not consistent, because even on their official website, they state that they have thousands of servers in over 90+ countries, yet there are only 53 flags shown. It is reported that TotalVPN covers 11 states in the US. However, there is not much information about specific server locations.
| Country | TotalVPN server |
|---|---|
| USA | Servers in 11 states (e.g., Chicago, Los Angeles, New York City) |
| Canada | Yes (at least Toronto, possibly others) |
| UK | Yes (e.g., London, possibly others) |
| Australia | Yes (e.g., Sydney, possibly others) |
| Brazil | Yes (at least one server) |
| Switzerland | Yes (e.g., Zurich) |
| Germany | Yes (e.g., Berlin) |
| France | Yes (e.g., Paris) |
I am not entirely satisfied with TotalVPN’s server network. While it covers most popular countries, the server selection is quite limited compared to top-tier VPN providers. For example, it covers only 11 states in the US, while PIA (Private Internet Access) has servers in every state. In addition, fewer servers per location means that each server handles more users, which can lead to slower speeds and more congestion, especially during peak hours. It also lacks servers in more niche locations, e.g., Asia or South America, which can be used for unblocking specific streaming libraries or accessing bot lobbies for gaming.
For a wider server network, I recommend opting for NordVPN (9300 servers in 137 countries) or Proton VPN (20300 servers in 148 countries).
Is TotalVPN safe?
TotalVPN is generally a safe VPN service. It employs strong AES-256 encryption, a kill switch, IP and DNS leak protection, and follows a no-logs policy. However, a no-logs policy has yet to be confirmed by independent audits, and a kill switch is not that strong on macOS and iOS.

Regarding VPN tunneling protocols, TotalVPN supports WireGuard, OpenVPN, IKEv2/IPSec, and the custom-developed Hydra protocol. This selection is great to provide a strong balance between security and performance. I got the best results while using WireGuard tunneling protocol.
TotalVPN also offers advanced security features, but not as many as competitors. It lacks multi-hop or Double VPN servers, which allow you to route your traffic through two VPN servers for an extra layer of protection. It also doesn’t have RAM-only server,s which wipe out all the data upon reboot and don’t store any information. However, it has obfuscated servers to help mask your VPN traffic as a regular internet traffic, and split tunneling (which is unfortunately not available on macOS and iOS).
If you get TotalVPN together with TotalAV Security suite, you will also get Total AdBlock, which successfully blocks ads. It also blocks pop-ups and trackers across websites, improving the browsing experience and security.
Overall, TotalVPN is secure enough for basic needs. However, if you need higher-level security features, you may look for another provider.
Who owns TotalVPN?
TotalVPN is owned by Total Security Limited, which is a UK-based company. The same company is also behind TotalAV antivirus software and Total AdBlock. From a privacy perspective, the UK is not generally considered a secure jurisdiction due to the country belonging to the Five Eyes Alliance.
Total Security Limited is known for its aggressive marketing, like frequent pop-ups and auto-renewal practices. While auto-renewal information is clearly stated and cancellation is easy, some users reported unexpected charges and difficulties. In addition, there have been accusations in the past linking TotalAV to companies that have been criticized for “scamware” and deceptive practices. However, these claims are only user-based and have not been legally acknowledged.
Does TotalVPN keep logs?
TotalVPN’s Privacy Policy states which information it may collect, why it may collect it, and how long it will keep it. In addition to your account details, they may also collect information about your device and your IP address.

TotalVPN also claims a no-logs policy, but there are some inconsistencies and concerns about what data they actually collect. As stated in the Privacy Policy, they collect quite a lot of personal information, such as your true location and other unique device identifiers. In addition to this, the no-logs policy is nothing more than just a claim, because it was never independently audited by a reputable third-party auditing firm like Deloitte. Such a lack of transparency is not ideal for a company that is focused on privacy.
How many devices does TotalVPN support?
The number of devices that TotalVPN supports depends on which plan you select. If you choose a standalone app, TotalVPN will allow only 5 simultaneous connections. Meanwhile, the TotalAV Internet Security plan (which includes TotalVPN) supports 6 devices, and the TotalAV Total Security plan (with TotalVPN) supports 8 devices at the same time.
TotalVPN works with Windows, macOS, Android, and iOS. Unfortunately, it doesn’t have dedicated apps for Linux, routers, Smart TVs, gaming consoles, or browsers. I found the installation process generally straightforward across all platforms. For computers (Windows and macOS), the TotalVPN setup process begins with purchasing the plan from the official website and then downloading the file onto your computer. The on-screen instructions guided me through the installation process, which was fairly quick. For Android and iOS, you start with the Google Play or App Store. You then download the app on your device and create the account. After getting a subscription, you will be able to use a VPN.
TotalVPN Reddit reviews: What are real users saying?
Redditors also have some things to say about TotalVPN. While I found good and bad reviews, the main thing repeatedly discussed was TotalVPN’s refund or pricing practices. Many consider TotalVPN a scam or a shady company because of a complex money-back guarantee process or automated subscription renewals. In my practice, getting a refund is indeed a bit complicated, but possible. Naturally, companies want to keep their clients, so they start offering significant discounts or partial refunds so you would stay using their services.

Nevertheless, the reviews of TotalVPN’s service are also pretty nice. People enjoy the product, find it easy to use, and are confident in its protection. They also emphasize that it is easy to install and navigate. Some appreciate TotalVPN’s affordable price. While some users miss extra features, they also recommend TotalVPN for others.

Final verdict: Is TotalVPN good in 2025?
TotalVPN is a solid choice for basic internet security without breaking the bank. It has significantly improved over the past few years, adding more tunneling protocols, enhancing security features, and upgrading streaming, torrenting, and gaming performance.
You can get TotalVPN as a standalone app or with TotalAV security suite. While TotalVPN doesn’t offer a free version or a free trial, you can still try its service with a risk-free money-back guarantee.
Overall, TotalVPN cannot compete with top-tier VPN service providers like NordVPN or Proton VPN. However, it is still a suitable option for beginners or those looking for a more affordable option.

This is the worst vpn on the market. It advertises false claim and tries desperately to get your money without promising what it delivers. I would never advertise or this place, even if my life depended on it . its a waste of money,
We're sorry to hear you've had such negative experiences! It isn't our all-time favorite VPN either, but we found it gave some useful basic protection, especially since it's part of a bigger security suite. If you still have a subscription with them and want to end that, you can always contact TotalAV's customer service through email. If you're looking for a VPN that follows through and performs well, we can recommend NordVPN or, if you're looking for a full security package, Surfshark One.
